I know preggo brain occurs (I occasionally get it).. But I could swear that I looked online, and didn't recall reading that green tea was BAD for pregnant women, especially in the first trimester..I read it in this pregnancy book at the store today and it went into how the antioxidents in green tea prevent the absorption of folic acid.. which can cause neural tube defects..

That being said.. I had green tea (decaf) throughout that time period.. Had no idea it was on the banned list..

Now it's weighing on my conscience

Keep in mind that neural tube defects or spinal bifida is definitely one of the things they are looking at when they did the big ultrasound so if by some small chance something was up, they would have told you :hug

Also keep in mind our moms' generation smoked and drank while pregnant and look how we turned out :nut

For piece of mind, mention it to your doctor next time you are in and they will likely put you at ease....

i was told it's only bad in large quantities and to have no more than 1 small glass a day.
So maybe it's okay?

Okay, well I've been thinking about it, and I had 1 mug a day of it when Pregnant with Mav for the 1st and 2nd trisesters basically....and he is fine, no neural tube issues....

I think I'll just be more careful....

Amy, I'm sure she is fine! Just ask the doc to double check if you are worried about it...:hug

I could be wrong but I'll toss it out there anyway. I think nueral tube defects happen like before you even know you are pregnant and that is why it is so important to take your folic acid because it is before you even know you are pregnant that it is the (biggest) issue.

Regular and ongoing ingestion of folic acid by women of childbearing age is necessary because approximately half of the pregnancies in the United States are unplanned,6 and neural tube closure occurs during the first 4 weeks of gestation.7 Despite the publication of the USPHS recommendation in September 1992, a 1998 poll showed that 70% of women aged 18 to 45 years still are not following the USPHS recommendation.8
