View Full Version : Baby Talk cover controversy Lynette 08-04-2006, 04:28 PM Thoughts? http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060804/od_afp/afplifestyleussocialbreastfeeding daisydoc 08-04-2006, 04:41 PM Breastfeeding is the best for babies and that's why I nursed Sevannah and am nursing Jazper. For those who can't nurse or choose not to I support them in their choice because I want to be supported in mine! I nurse in public ALL the time!! I "cover up" and try not to "expose" myself but sometimes it can't be helped. I personally have never been asked to stop or go someplace else to nurse either kid. I have gotten looks but I ignore them. I've even ahd people go "oh a baby, can I see? or s/he's eating so I guess not." I reply "I don't care here" and lift the receiveing blanket so they can take a look. Breastfeeding is natural and shouldn't be treated like the taboo that it is. I'm not offended by the cover but they could have shot it differently. Not many women sit there holding the baby upright facing the breast to nurse... so it's not a "natural" picture. So if you don't like it don't buy it and don't keep it in your house. I really don't think it should spark national outrage. People need to get over themselves! LMS 08-04-2006, 05:18 PM As someone who chose not to nurse I'm not at all offended by the cover. So what? She's breastfeeding. And we should all care why? I don't understand why there has to be a hoopla everytime someone whips out a boob. Talk about alarmist. LMS 08-04-2006, 05:22 PM now, i DO think I would have been offended if there was a boob on the cover of Popular Science. ;) It's not like the image didn't COMPLETELY coordinate with the main story of the mag. becky 08-04-2006, 05:29 PM As someone who supports extended nursing this doesn't bother me a bit. I nursed both my girls, kayla until she was 8 months and Myah until 18 months. Breast feeding is a choice and is not right for everyone. I never was that big so I never really felt the need to "cover up" when in public. most times my girls head covered up for me. I did how ever buy nursing tops to limit the amount of skin exposed while in public. I found myself often walking around the mall or stores with my baby attached to boob. these things happen. I dont get this magazine but if anyone does get it, i would love to read this issue when you are done if that is okay. Mom of 2 08-04-2006, 05:47 PM I nursed both my kids(Patty till 9 months and Tyler till 1 year) and I always brought a blanket to cover up so others would not be uncomfortable. Nursing is better for the baby and as a parent, shouldn't we do what is best for our children? When I was nursing my kids in public which was often, I was never asked to leave or to stop doing that. I think they are making too big of a deal out of this picture, even though it is not the bed picture to show breastfeeding. Kate Mom to Patty and Tyler Lynette 08-04-2006, 08:32 PM I love the pic, I love how the baby was looking up at his mom :) Personally, I think we see more boobs at the Oscars or an MTV video and it is those people who have sexualized something INTENDED for babies who have lost grip with reality. The lady who made the comment about it making her husband uncomfortable was either projecting or her husband was uncomfortable that it wasn't him in the pic! LOL! Geez, some of those quotes were acting like it was porn! When I had Salina at 19 I thought breastfeeding was gross, I did not want a baby sucking on my boob and I figured science knew better so I was going with formula. Well, over the years I did a complete 180 on my opinion of science and realized the experts don't know half of what they think they do so I was determined to bf Alaina until whenever. When she started right in as a newborn I had the disntinct thought, "So THAT is what I have been lugging these things around for all these years!!!" LOL! She is almost 22 months and still going and it is funny how much she is able to express at this age how much she LOVES it! She sighs, laughs, giggles, plays goofy games, in fact the other day she sat up, saw milk still on me, poked the drop with her finger, put it in her mouth and said, "Yum yum yum!" and laughed, it was too cute! I can honestly say Salina did not enjoy her bottle that much and tossed it herself when she was less than 18mo. Since Alaina is older she doesn't nurse as often, usually when she wakes up in the morning, when she goes down for a nap or bed or whenever she is upset and needs to mellow out. We don't nurse in public anymore and when I did I usually tried to do it in the car or something so I could relax but I didn't cover up because I figured I was already in the car and if they wanted to stare then go right ahead. One time I made the comment to Salina how no one ever said anything negative about it to me and she laughed and said, "Mom, they are too afraid to! You have a look on your face that says, 'I freakin' dare you to say something!'" :D dacotahsgirl 08-04-2006, 09:54 PM That photo is completley natural. What the heck is the big deal? meeg124 08-05-2006, 08:01 PM I don't find a picture of a nursing baby, with an exposed breast in any way offensive. However, I feel like this picture is very posed and was done that way strictly for "shock" value, so I thinkt that detracts from it. Megan |
