I jsut read that to dh too.... that was a very interesting article! Thanks for posting it.

We knew from when I was pregnant before that it had to do with the brain stem, and that there was no way to prevent it, but always wanted to know more about the *why*, so this actually provides some answers.

Yeah, I've had my own 'theories' about SIDS, but was still scared about putting them to sleep on their stomachs and such. I always felt it was some abnormality in the brain that made the baby forget to breathe, and being on its stomach and back in the fetal position made a SIDS baby feel like it was back in the womb and didn't need to breathe, whereas 'normal' babies could do fine in that position.

Funny you say that...cause that is something I actually said to my mom before....when she was trying to tell me that it had to do with suffocation ... which I guess it could also be....but I think that if it *is* SIDS related it makes a lot fo sense that it could be something to do with being too comfortbale.....just like you siad above.

That is really interesting. It's great to know that they are getting close to pin pointing it and possibly being able to test for it. Awesome news!

That *is* interesting.. but it says it effects infants 1 month to 1 year.. I thought the risk was birth and then it just slowly declines at 6 mos?

no, the highest risk is like 1-6 months, and especially 2-4 months, but it can happen before and after. I heard of someone who lost a baby to SIDS just after their first birthday.

Yeah, but.....the article doesn't say why the serontonin levels are haywire, whether it is from some genetic, congenital, or an environmental factor or a combination or if this was the ONLY reason kids die of SIDS so it basically just another layer of the onion :(

Interesting research.

It would be nerve racking if a child tested "positive" as a SIDS risk factor due to the seratonin. Wouldn't that parent always be freaked out for the first 1 month-1 yr. that their child might go to sleep one day and not wake up?

I swear being a parent gives me a ton of grey hair.

A friend of mine lost both her babies to SIDS. Not sure she would have had the second if they could have told her it was Genetic.... The first was heart breaking and the second did her in... She has never recovered

How utterly depressing. I really feel bad for your friend. I think it would be easier on the heart not to have, than to have lost so greatly.
