Yeah, he seemed a little reckless at times but that is sad, he has at least one little kid with his wife I believe :(

Yeah- he did some crazy stuff... but he was definitely entertaining. He had 2 kids a daughter (8) and a son (2). Pretty sad.
girl, you beat me to EVERYTHING. LOL

When I read the tread title I was thinking "who the heck is Steve Irwin?" I never knew his name... only knew him as the crocodile hunter! LOL That said, that's really sad! A complete freakish accident... but with all the crazy things that man did it's not too surprising that he would end up being killed in a completely "unnatural" way. I feel for his wife and kids.

I never knew his name. I just knew him as the guy with all the wild animals. I thought at times he was wreckless/daring with some of those animals. It is sad that he left behind kids.

anna: When I heard it I figured that it would be ironic if he died by choking on an almond or something... something completely boring.

Jackie: true! but you have to admitt that the only reason he died form the sting is b/c it went straight into his heart... which is a freak incident. If it had stung him anywhere else he would probably still be alive.

I still can't believe the news. I have been watching that guy from the very beginning. My step dad and I used to crack up at all the stupid stuff he did. This was even before we all knew his co-host was really his wife. Its so sad. Although he was nuts, this is definately a lost for the animal tv shows

Very sad. I have been kind of bummed about it all day. I love that guy. He was such a character.

Okay so what the :cuss is wrong with people that they are arguing that the video footage of his death should be widely distributed so that everyone can see it? I am sitting here at work listening to the news and that is what they are saying on the radio. People forget (because he was so widely known worldwide) that this guy has a family that should be allowed to grieve in peace without the worst day of their lives being broadcast on the news worldwide!!!

I second that Kaisa. I dont thin k the public anything more than just satify thier morbid curiosity.

I had read that he made some comment once that all his tapes should be shown, even if he gets eaten by a crocodile because that is nature or something but I dunno if that is true or not.
Seems like a dumb thing for the people to argue about since they have no say whatsoever anyways. To them he was just a celebrity, I keep thinking about his poor two year old son who will probably never remember him from anything other than tv and home movies :(
He was not a celebrity, He was not a public official... he was a nature enthusiast and an animal researcher.... how does that POSSIBLY make everyone "deserve" to see the video of his death? It's not like the video of Kennedy getting shot... he got stung by a sting ray.. it was a freak accident.. why should that be on tv? It just baffles me.
Did you know James Polk died from Diarrhea?? Should we see that on video too?

I feel really sad for his family, but honestly ever since he dangled his one year old in front of a crocodile WHILE FEEDING said crocodile red meat with the other hand, I haven't much cared for him. I thought he was a tool.

I think we all do things with our kids in our own comfort zone that others wouldn't. Granted it wasn't the best idea to do that, but I know Chad and I take Lucca places that our friends or family wouldn't take their kids.

I think there's a difference between personal comfort level and actually putting your kids in danger. Like, some parents wouldn't want to take their kids to a third world country, but if you did, no one would think "OMGOSH CALL CPS NOW!" whereas, if you took your kids to a crackhouse, they would. Kwim?
I think most people would agree that holding your one year old with one hand while you dangle meat in front of a crocodile with the other hand is NOT a safe situation. Animal rights groups and child welfare groups were VERY upset with Steve for doing that.
Just my $.02

I totally understand what you are saying and I wouldn't do that with my child. Wait a minute I wouldn't even do that with myself. I think that was part of his appeal he was just crazy cooky like the crazy bear guy that finally got eaten. I don't agree with putting your child or anyone for that matter in danger, but I don't think he realized that that was crazy. That was just his way of life and he thought nothing of it.

Yea, that's true, he didn't consider being with wild animals crazy. I hadn't really thought of it that way. But, though his death was a freak accident, it does go to show you that when you're around animals, accidents can and do happen. Look at what happened to Christoper Reeves, and he was an accomplished rider doing a sport (eventing) which most people don't even consider to be very dangerous.

FYI: I think his kid was only a month or two old when crazy crock guy was holding him in one arm while feeding the crocs with the other. Not that it changes anything. He was still freakin' crazy to put his kid that close to a croc!

I always wondered why his wife was ok with that? "You want to hold the baby I just carried around in my body for nine months and then pushed out after several hours of painful labor while you feed a croc some chicken? Sure, have fun boys!"
Although, I have to say if there is anyone who has any hope of being safe about it, he would have been the guy...
And with Siegfried and Roy and the tiger. You are so right about animals though Lindsey, I know a professional handler who shows people's Danes at dog shows and she showed me the scars where a 160lb dog just snapped one day and almost ripped her arm off and that is a domesticated animal...
yup. my brother was taking some kind of science classes in college where they had to study cadavers (sp?) and one of the bodies was an infant that had been sleeping in the bedroom and the parents didn't notice their tiny dog (can't remember the breed) went in the room. The baby died from the dog bitting ithundreds of times. G (my brother) said it looked like someone took a weed wacker to the baby. He actually brought this up as a way of pleading with me to never leave Duke alone with Brendan when B was first born. :lol Way to scare the crap out of a new mom

Nice story for your bro to share with you as a new mom! I would have knocked him upside the head! :tongue But it's true... you just never know. We've been really lucky with our dogs and our parents' dogs. But they "grew up" around babies. However, James and I have an understanding... the first time any animal of ours so much as nips at the kids is gone! We love our dogs like they are our kids but the "real kids" come first!

One of my old dogs was in labor and sat on one of her puppies while trying to push another out. I put my hand under her to pull the puppy out. She nipped at me, without touching me at all. Just to let me know to back off. It was the first time she had ever nipped at me. Full fangs and all. I did not have kids back then.
anna: we have the same agreement

The sad thing is that I bet that little dog showed resentment to the baby before that and they ignored it not to mention that is not something the baby would be quiet about either....
We don't leave ours alone around Alaina simply because they are so big and goofy that they still routinely step on my feet or whip me across the thigh with their tails. We actually don't even let her walk amongst them unless they are all laying down and mellow because one little bump could send her flying.

Lynette- What kind of dogs do you have??
I don't have dogs (we live in an apt.) but we have 2 snakes (ball pythons) that I HATE! My husband and I got them long before we were married because we wanted to have "pets" together. In retrospect it was a retarded thing to do and we are about to get rid of them.

I didn't see the actual tribute, but I saw a commercial thing maybe the day after he died and that was sad enough...

nope... we didn't see it either! Tuesday night is our "big" tv night! We watch House, NCIS and the Unit. But since House and NCIS are on at the same time we watched NCIS and recorded House with our DVR, then set it up to record The Unit while we watched House. So we'll watch The Unit later this week!
I think I saw the commercial you talked about KAisa. It was sad!
