View Full Version : So, will you fabulos photogs share?
I got a nice DSLR camera a few months ago. I'm not planning on taking this to the professional level, but I'd like to at least take decent pictures of my boys.
So, ladies, will you share your hints and tips with us fledgling home photographers?

If you don't want to get too techie, put it on portrait mode, find nice light (diffused and even, either full shade, next to a window, overcast or sunset) and let your boys play...give them a little direction (ie...stay in the shade, try to direct your face at the light if you're using a window).
If you're shooting w/ mixed light (darker room with bright window), meter your exposure off the boys faces...meaning, put the focus sensors on the face, push shutter down halfway to get a reading, keep your finger pressed and recomposite the image, then shoot :)
Was that too techie???
Ya lost me with meter and exposure.... :D
I bought a book shortly after buying the camera. I need to sit down and crack the book open. :)
Dh has been playing with it, he's got way more patience than I do, and he's taken some fabulous shots!

I bought a field guide for my DLSR (Canon rebel XTi) ...you are inspiring me to start perusing through it, considering I've had the book since April.:bag
I have always had trouble "getting" what aperture is and the f-stops always confuse me so I end up shooting in auto out of frustration and feeling dumb.

Shoot on Portrait mode and you don't have to worry about meter and exposure...the camera does it for you ;)

:yeah to what mariah said. that is what i did for years until I got my DSLR and now everything is manual mode. using your automatic settings will make taking photos so much easier for you.
I started with all auto then moved to aperture priority until i figured out how my camera meters and then switched to full manual. If you ever want to get to the point of shooting full manual mode or even understanding how to use the aperture or shutter priority modes i would HIGHLY recommend getting a book called Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition) (http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Updated/dp/0817463003/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1218529126&sr=8-1) Its pretty straight forward and easy to understand plus it is pretty cheap
I have that book, Becky. :) Again, I haven't opened it. :)
I have a Magic Lantern guide for my camera. I also have the Digital Photography Book (http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photography-Book-Scott-Kelby/dp/032147404X).
I need to crack the books when I get home! :D

If you want we can hook up sometime while you are in town and play around with your camera. You will be surprised how much more you can do once you figure out how the on board meter works :)

Thanks Becky, I'll take you up on that. I left the "good one" at home and just have my point and shoot. :) It has a few settings similar to the DSLR, and it's made by the same folks.... :)

We have a couple dates anyway so I am sure we will get a chance to have a little camera fun
