did you ever get them?
how old were you when you got them?
did you get them removed?
do you still have them??

weird questions, but i've never gotten mine, even though my dentist has always said they were in there and would need to be pulled due to the way they were in there. i've been having a lot of mouth pain for various reasons (swolen lymphnode, biting my cheek...i've been sleeping with cotton pads between my cheek and the back of my mouth to keep from being in pain lately) and today the back area on my jaw started hurting and it dawned on me that perhaps i am finally getting my wisdom teeth...or maybe not? so i thought i'd see other people's experiences with them.

did you ever get them? Umm I had them, but they never errupted because they were growing in my jaw toward the front of my face...if that makes sense.

how old were you when you got them? I was 22.

did you get them removed? I HAD TO! It was basically an emergency surgery actually. Not to freak you out, but I was having similar symptoms as you, and I started to lose hearing in my right ear because the swelling in my jaw was so bad it was pressing on stuff....anyway. I had braces and when I went in for my check up I make a comment and they looked at me and said I needed X-rays ASAP, so I got them that day, and then came back, and the ortho said "if you were my kid I'd schedule you today for their removal!" But he knew I needed to call work and such, so it was scheduled for two days later.... I was told that if I had waited I may have lost parts of my jaw! And I has the possibility of being paralyzed on one side of my face too. HOLY CRAP! Ya, it wasn't good.

do you still have them?? Nope...all four were surgically removed while I was under anesthesia for about an hour...or 2....I can't recall now....but It was BAD! And since I had to see a specialist due to complications, it was quite $$$$

I think you should get some x-rays! Just to be safe!

...losing the hearing in your ear???

that's been happening on and off for about a year now...i'll lose it completely in my left ear. usually i will ake up in the morning being deaf in it, and then after a few minutes it will pop to normal.
they had said that mine would need to get removed because there was so little space for them to come through and they were angled towards the rest of my teeth.

now i'm freaking out.

Ya, the nerve was being crushed or something, as well as the swelling was causing my ears to clog up...

Yep...mine were growing toward my other teeth....2 of them down deep in the jaw touching the nerves, one above the nerve but would never reach the surface, and one that may have erupted, but we will never know that now ;)

But ya....if I had never been in this situation I'd think pshhhh what are the chances it would be something *that* bad.....but now.....I freak out about that stuff....and I'd say better to be safe than sorry, and get it checked out.

did you ever get them? I got one during each pregnancy (I need to have 2 more kids so I have a full set :lol )
how old were you when you got them? 25 & 27
did you get them removed? Nope, still there, they don't bother me, though I am sure at some point I will have them removed since it is hard to keep them clean being way back there and all. I actually have enough room in my mouth for all of my teeth, so until I they get bad, they will stay.

I like Sara got one after/during each pg. I had them removed about a year ago do to them farking up my other teeth. My dentist originally told me I'd never get them because they were too deep... I agree with Lorah without all the freaky/worry details, it does sounds like you may be teething one or more of your teeth and need to get them out becaus they are impacting your other teeth. I had just the right amount of space I guess for them to fit or maybe a tad less but my main issue was they were so far back and my mouth so small I couldn't get a toothbrush far enough back there and had extensive cavities going on.

did you ever get them? I have one that plays peek-a-boo. About every 6 months, it hurts for about a week, and then it goes away. Same one each time. Started in spring of 2006. I was going to get it removed in August (and do all at once if they'd agree) but I was pregnant at the time and decided to wait. Now that I'm not, I'll probably try for early next year lol. I'm in no rush.
how old were you when you got them? The only one I've had the issues with started when I was 19. Coincidentally, it was the day after one of my good friends told me she was having pain from one of hers. I believe it was even the same tooth. I think it gave my body a bad idea lol
did you get them removed? Not yet, but I will. I'd like to see if I can just get them all done at once, to prevent me from having to possibly deal with it again, later.
do you still have them?? So far, I still have all of them. But only that one has come up at all, and even then it's only like half the tooth and it likes to go back in hiding sometimes.

I had the lower two removed when I was 12. They hadn't come in but the ortho knew they were going to cause a problem if they ever did and he was taking other teeth out anyway so we did those too. (I had 4 adult teeth removed due to crowding) The top two we waited on until they had grown away from my sinuses. They never descended either but did start to ache so I had them removed when I was around 20.

all this talk makes me wonder how many people actually are able to keep their wisdom teeth. its seems like just about everyone I know has had them removed

MamaLaura
09-16-2008, 11:22 AM
Everyone that I've talked about it with who has had them come in has also had them removed. Some only one, some all of them. But pretty much any that came in were removed.

I believe evolutionarily we used to need those teeth as we lost other ones due to dental hygiene issues. Now that we aren't loosing teeth as a whole to decay and just more wear etc. than a millenia ago we no longer need those teeth but most people still produce them for a lack of a better term. I also think our mouths are supposed to be getting smaller??

did you ever get them? Yes All 4
how old were you when you got them? when I was 17 or 18
did you get them removed? nope - I had 4 first molars removed when I was 14 due to crowding and my dentist just monitored my wisdom teeth to make sure they didn't screw up all the work my orthodontist did.
do you still have them?? Yep, they are hard to keep clean, but no major issues...at my last appointment the hygentist said that less people are getting them because we don't need them. Strange how evolution works...:)

I had mine removed when I was 16. The top ones came down straight, but the bottom ones were coming in sideways and were impacted. Oh joy!

Yes

N/A
did you get them removed?
Bottom 2 were removed in high school. They were starting to come in and were messing up the work that the braces had fixed.
do you still have them??
I still have the top 2. My right side one came in after the molar in front of it was removed. I had a filling in that tooth, it cracked under pressure from the wisdom tooth.
My left side is taking forever to come in. I can feel the top of it with my tongue, but it's not in all the way.
Guess you can say I'm lop-sided. :)

did you ever get them? how old were you when you got them? did you get them removed? do you still have them?

My teeth were in there, but the dentist never let them come in because I didn't/don't have enough room. I had oral surgery at age 17 (summer between jr & sr year of H.S.) to have all four of them removed at once. I was under general anesthesia and didn't feel (or hear) a thing. However, after the surgery two of my packs came out and I had dry socket to deal with. I wish I had them in a jar somewhere! I do that kind of thing. :loser :bag

I've heard that too about our (the human population in general) mouths getting smaller, more need for wisdom teeth removed, and more people just not getting them in the first place.

THIS IS REALLY COOL INFO! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_teeth

Nicole, I think you are on to something. It sounds like a good idea to get your wisdom teeth situation checked out.

did you ever get them? I had 2 (both bottom?) - no one else in my family has any.
how old were you when you got them? 18 or 19
did you get them removed? Yes, and I got the good juice so I didn't have to hear the crunching sound - however, I was told that I got so combative they almost weren't able to get the second one out :bag Maybe that is why I hate going to the dentist now - subconsiously I remember it? I never had problems before now that I think of it.
do you still have them?? nope

Okay....so if you are squeamish don't read this....

My brother Jason had his removed when in County Jail a few years back. He opted to do it there cause it was paid for. BUT....

They handed him an Advil (cause you can't have anything stronger in there), the guy put his knee on my brothers chest, and used both hands on what looked to him like pliers, and yanked them out...

Ahhhhh the price of free huh?!?!
