oh my gosh!!! I've been thinking about Cloth Diapering for MONTHS now... and I was thinking that even if brendan potty trains at EXACTLY 2 years old, i'll still spend over $600 on diapers before then, and that's assuming we keep at the same pace the WHOLE time (ie. no stomach bugs or diarrhea, etc)... so i've given in! I'm doing it!
I contacted the woman who owns BreesBums.com (http://www.BreesBums.com) (she's a part of another group i'm in) and she was INCREDIBLE.
Seriously... I've never had service this good before. I'm in shock.
FULL of information... even gave me her Yahoo Messenger screen name and messaged with me for over an HOUR answering questions! She was phenomenal, so if you ever need cloth diapers (or accessories) and you want great service... GO TO BREE

I don't know if we'll switch to cloth diapers (hubby will never change a diaper then! LOL) but I am so looking for more info on training pants for Sevannah b/c she knows she can just pee in the pull ups and nothing is going to happen, kwim?

So thanks for that info Jackie! I'll hopefully be chatting with Bree to get more info! :)

FWIW I also sell cloth diaper things through Natural Family Boutique. The diapering packages can be a great great deal if you host a party. FuzziBunz are just like disposibles as far as ease of use. The boys are talking to Elias right now so my time is a bit limited before they peeve him off but if anyone is interested you can PM me.

anna: Yeah, I'd definatly check out her site. Email her and tell her you know me if you have any questions about products, i'm sure she'll talk to you on YIM if you have more than 1 question. I was so impressed.

Thanks for the info Jackie and I will definately check them out. I'm first to admit that i'm spoiled rotten because i have a diaper service but i have been thinking about getting a few for "spares" and for those times i will be out of town.

I love fuzzi bunz....my little one can stay in one of those for seven hours through the night and no leaking! They're very easy to take care of and they come in cute colors. During the day we use prefolds with diaper covers, but I love my fuzzi bunz for night time. I highly recommend them...

Jackie, just out of curiosity, why did you look into cloth? I remember the old pre-folds my parents used on us and for Brianna, I knew I'd be the ONLY one diapering if I went that route so I didn't even try. But I checked out Brees Bums and theres some new stuff out there I may be willing to try. I still can't imagine doing pre-folds though. Brianna will hardly sit still for velcro, how could I possibly get pins on her? Geez, I just thought of something... do you think they'd do cloth at a daycare?

Most people do not use pins any more even with prefolds. I think Becky just puts her prefolds into her cover for M. I use a snappi (http://www.snappibaby.com/generic0.html) when I use prefolds, which I am just now getting into after doing snuggleups (http://www.twiddlebritches.com/snusarah.html) (I don't think they are really made/sold anymore but there are similar ones on the market) 99% of the time with my first 3.

I am not sure if daycares will do prefolds but something like FuziBunz or another all in one really isn't and different than a disposible as far as ease of use for the staff if you prestuff the fuzibunz. Then instead of throwing in the diaper genie for example they can just put it in your waterproof diaper bag that you take home daily. I think you would have more luck with homedaycare providers.

Lisa is right. I have a diaper service which of course means i use pre-folds. They are so easy for me to use though because i just put them into water proof covers and its take me just as much time as it does to put on a disposible. I have seen both Lisa and Lindsay use those new diapers but i'm a creature of habit and would have a hard time using anything else besides pre-folds.

I have a few FuzziBunz when I was considering switching but I just couldn't get them clean enough. The colors are way cute though, they never leaked, and Alaina seems to like wearing them. I used them when she had that rash a month ago too, less chaffing than disposables.

10-10-2006, 10:11 PM
myah always breaks out in a rash (however mild it may be) when she wears disposibles. We only use them when all her covers are in the wash which tonight is one of those night. I can only use a certain cover for the evenings or she;ll wake up all wet :( The upsite to cloth though is that i never has to put on powder or cream on her butt becuase she never has a rash. I'm sure that is saving me money too.

Yeah, Lisa is right. Most people don't use pins anymore... I actually prefer the swaddlebees I think which snap... They're pocket diapers do you put a liner down through the "hole" in the back and then you put it on just like a disposable.

I wanted to use cloth w/ Ashur, but didn't have any access to information (no internet) about them, and I couldn't find diaper covers anywhere. Eventually, my Mother-in-Law scared me away from the idea entirely with her stories about using pins and having to rinse the diapers in the toilet.

While I was pregnant with Ebin, I knew I was going to use cloth no matter what. I started doing research and found out how different it is now from when our parents used them, no pins, REALLY cool covers, etc. I even talked my friend Radha (Romero99) into trying them with me.

We decided to use a diaper service (tidee didee) so we don't even have to rinse the diapers out. We just stick them in a bucket and put them on the porch once a week and a nice driver picks them up and delivers a bag of fresh new dipes!!

Nathan hasn't complained once about using them Anna, the covers are so easy that it's really no big deal. I actually enjoy diapering my son - if that's possible :)

I use prefolds w/ covers. My favorite covers so far are Imse Vimse, Light wraps & Cottonwraps.http://www.sonomacountymom.com/forum/images/smilies/general/thumb.gif

I had the opposite... My parents had to use cloth on me b/c I reacted to the disposibles so I got "warnings" that I might have to use cloth with my kids too. we used disposibles with Sevannah and like I've said were thinking about switching to cloth with jazper. I'm all for it... and I think once I can show James what they look like and how they aren't hard to do he'll be fine... not to mention all the $$ we would be saving on diapers.

Stacy: I use tidee didee too. Love it so much! Where did you get your covers? I am using the pro-wrap which i bought from our diaper service in LA County (ti-dee Dydee) and would really like to find something else. Not that i dont like the prowrap but everyone tells me there are so much better ones out there.

The only other ones i have tried are ones i got at Babies-R-Us. Even though they are really soft they leak. Myah is 2 so she pees alot at night. Its like she is saving it up for when she falls asleep. I double up her pre-folds when she goes to bed (she all diaper butt) but if she has a particularly wet night she will soak through her diapers. With the prowrap neither the bed or her clothes do get wet. Same goes for when she has a particularly active day. I dont change her as often so she is completely soaking her cloth diapers to the point it can't hold anymore. This usually happens when we are out at the park, there is no stopping to get a diaper changed cuz all she wants to do is play.

So i'm always looking for good covers that can that wont get soaked when the diaper is soaked but would like a cover that is also soft. I love the pro-wrap because they dont leak but like i said, i'm always looking for others.

I just noticed on the Tidee Didee website http://www.tideedidee.com/sacservices.htm that their cost for 100 diapers is $18 and even if you go to Walmart that many disposables cost like $20 plus tax. I was thinking it would be too late to switch to make it cost effective but now I don't know...

LMS
10-14-2006, 11:03 AM
wow, that *sounds* like a good deal. I think I'm confused as to how a diaper service works, though. I know that they pick up the dirties and drop off the cleans, but what i'm confused about is how it ends up pricing out.

eta: now that i'm thinking about it thought, Brendan goes through about 18$ worth of disposables a week anyways, so that's not really a huge savings,y ou know?

becky
10-14-2006, 11:22 AM
Okay this is how the diaper service works out. I will use Myah as an example:

She typically goes through 50 diapers a week which means we use 200 diapers a month on average. That is with me changing her diaper all the time too. Each month I pay $55 and thats it. so if you add it up that is 200 for $55.

Di Dee only comes to Santa Rosa (from Sacramento) once a week which is on Wed. I just leave my pail out on the porch so i dont have to remember to set the diapers out on wednesday's. I forgot once last year and i had to wait a week before i could get my clean diapers. (I did make them send me clean ones via UPS but then i had 2 bags for them to pick up the next week)

Looking at my bill, it says i pay $13.75 for 50 super diapers which comes out to $55 every four weeks. That is still far less then what i'd pay to use disposibles.

Last time i bought disposibles i think i paid over $18 bucks for like 36 diapers. I forget how much it costs at Costco.

eta: now that i'm thinking about it thought, Brendan goes through about 18$ worth of disposables a week anyways, so that's not really a huge savings,y ou know?

True, it is not an enourmous savings, I guess I was assuming a diaper service would be a lot more expensive rather than pretty much the same really. The bonus is that they do all the washing because when you do cloth you can't just let it pile up and wash once a week unless you want to invest in 50 cloth diapers. You are also supposed to wash them seperately from the rest of the clothes and like I mentioned before, even after washing in hot water, mine still smelled like pee but I would imagine such a business has it down to a science on how to get smells out?

Not to mention it is better for their skin, better for the environment, etc so it has other benefits than just cost but in a time when we all have to pinch our pennies, I thought it would be cost prohibitive for us so I was just surprised that it isn't.

becky
10-14-2006, 11:55 AM
I thought the same thing too. i do have a few pre-folds but i hate having to wash them. I think it not only is going to cost the water to wash them but the cost of the diapers themselves. This is why i love the diaper service. You dont have to do anything other than take them off the kid and put them in the bucket.

So i'm always looking for good covers that can that wont get soaked when the diaper is soaked but would like a cover that is also soft. I love the pro-wrap because they dont leak but like i said, i'm always looking for others.

There are some really nice wool ones. Wool is super absorbant and diaper wool is not itchy. I have a 20-26 pound large cover (it looks like it will fit a larger child) that is like the prowraps as far as fit unused that you can borrow to see if you like it. It may not work for a night time diaper though as far as sizing.... I also like the disana wool Lindsay loaned me for Elias and I am going to get some in bigger sizes for night time use as he like Myah is a heavy wetter and he has outgrown the newborn/small size for night time use since I now double up on the prefolds. And they are well priced IMO, here is an example: DISANA WOOL (http://www.tinybirdsorganics.com/organicwool/DisanaDiaperCovers.html) (the first ones listed)
He is currently using this in either medium or large at night LANA WOOL (http://www.tinybirdsorganics.com/organicwool/DiaperCovers_LanaWoolSoakers.html) but I prefer the tighter/longer legs I think plus the disana is organic, thicker and cheaper to boot
