View Full Version : Madonna adoption Lynette 10-14-2006, 07:29 AM So what do you guys think about this? http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/10/13/madonna.adopt.reut/index.html becky 10-14-2006, 11:29 AM So she is taking after Angelina Jolie huh? I wonder how much of this is for publicity and how much is for the sake of the child. Its true that celebrities have the ablility to raise public awarness about adpotion from other countries (more so that a regular person) but at the same time i can't help to think that some of thier efforts are based on what it can do for the career. KaisaG 10-14-2006, 01:41 PM I think that either way he is better off with her, than he is in an orphanage in Africa. If the father of the boy has agreed to the adoption, he must feel the same way. Even if the boy ends up being raised by Madonna's nannies, at least he'll be some place safe, always have a full belly, and have understand what it means to be loved on a more individual basis- even if it is just by a nanny... Lynette 10-14-2006, 01:51 PM I can see both points of view, I mean Angelina Jolie seems to pick up a kid in every country she films in like a souvenir but then better with her than an orphanage although boys are usually treated much better than girls in most countries. I can't help but think if celebrities really want to help that their money would be better spent by helping an entire village or orphange than one kid. I mean, those kids are going to end up wearing Prada, eating 5 star meals, having all the $$$ in the world for an education and I just think the money that is spent on one of them could save hundreds in their own country. There is also the whole culture thing I suppose but I can't really speak to that because I am just a white American Euro mutt so I can't relate. LMS 10-14-2006, 04:25 PM uhm, why aren't these celebs helping children in their own country? Last I heard, we still had a few orphans of our own to take care of becky 10-14-2006, 04:57 PM helping a child in the USA doesn't get as much publicity as it does adopting one from africa i guess. colleen&Kail 10-14-2006, 05:30 PM :yeah exactly what you said jackie, it makes me wonder if they are doing this for the publicity or because they really want to help a child....its not like money is an issue they could adopt 10 kids and pay for nannies to care for them. Lynette 10-14-2006, 05:39 PM True, but there is a lot more orphans in Africa because of the AIDS epidemic, millions and millions without government funding to support them. Our government doesn't do a great job but at least they try. One article was saying that if they didn't turn the boy she adopted over to the orphanage they were just going to bury him alive at one month old. Although...if ya still have a dad you aren't really an orphan either so I dunno why he can't help. Although when it comes to money freakin' Madonna could buy a whole country probably and fund the whole ecomony for what she spends in clothes each year.... KaisaG 10-14-2006, 07:15 PM I guess I'm too much of a realist. As much as I'd like to think that someone like Madonna would just give everything she has to an entire country, it will never happen. At least she has pledged to donate $3mil. I guess I'm just happy that they are doing something because when it comes down to it... these famous people don't have to do anything. They could be sitting in one of their many palaces, in whatever country they want sipping cocktails and wasting money on lavish social events... Instead they are visiting impoverished countries, and adopting one of the millions of kids that are victims of their surroundsings. If all Madonna wants to do is adopt one child that would otherwise have a life surrounded by sickness and starvation, well then I guess I'll take the one adoption and count it as a blessing. At least that one child was saved from the fate that he was born into. JeriAnne 10-14-2006, 07:32 PM Since when is Madonna adopting a child "news". I can't stand it when the local news does stories on celebrities...If I wanted to hear about them and their stupid antics I would tune into the E! channel. Sorry. (disclaimer: I am in no way saying that adopting a child is a stupid antic...was just making a general comment) KaisaG 10-14-2006, 07:46 PM I don't tend to follow celebs either. I could care less who is cheating on who, who is getting married, who sun bathes topless, etc. I only care about people I know. That's why I'm happy to hear that she is adopting him... If it's her or anybody else... it doesn't matter. I'm just happy he's getting adopted. alowe 10-14-2006, 07:49 PM Some silly stuff about celebrities makes the news. I couldn't believe when it was a huge deal that Shiloh Jolie-Pitt had diaper rash. Who cares deal with it like the rest of us do. (disclaimer: I am in no way saying that adopting a child is a stupid antic...was just making a general comment) I read this and was thinking you had a great point....then I went to check my email and the Yahoo headlines had to do with families being killed, war, N. Korea's nukes, so I decided I would much rather hear about celebrity stuff cause everything else is so ugly and depressing :( JeriAnne 10-14-2006, 10:18 PM I read this and was thinking you had a great point....then I went to check my email and the Yahoo headlines had to do with families being killed, war, N. Korea's nukes, so I decided I would much rather hear about celebrity stuff cause everything else is so ugly and depressing :( I just don't even listen to the news lately because it's too depressing. I still don't think that some stuff the celebs do should make the primetime news. American is too celebrity obsessed. LMS 10-14-2006, 10:34 PM I'll admit it. I'm celebrity obsessed.... I read thesuperficial.com EVERY DAY.... but then again he's making fun of them for being dumb, so maybe that's different? Lynette 10-15-2006, 07:09 AM I just don't even listen to the news lately because it's too depressing. Totally agree, I haven't listened to the news on TV in I dunno how long. I usually run into it on the Net and then wish I never even clicked on a headline on my way to my email :( I think the most annoying thing is that beautiful, wonderful things happen every single day but the media never brings those things up so it makes us all scared and paranoid about the ugly things which *really* aren't as common as they would like us to think. becky 10-15-2006, 11:43 AM i'm the same way. I stopped watching the news once we moved up here. I moved away to get away from the daily shootings/deaths/crime that was on the news everyday. There was never anything cheerful on so i figured why watch. I guess that means i'm living a sheltered life but in some ways i would rather just not know. I really can't do anything about it. Just this week Victor and I watched a National Gepgraphic Show on the LA Riots and in a way relived the whole expereince. It was more than 10 years ago yet we remember it so clearly. Most of you were lucky to be no where near LA when that happened yet we were there. SO sad and stupid. daisydoc 10-15-2006, 02:10 PM whats the News? :lol if it's not disney or child related I have no idea what's going on! :D The only day I get to read a part of the paper is Sundays and even that's minimal. I pay no attention to the online news stuff b/c I just don't have time. The kids barely give me the time to check my email and the new posts here. That said... after skimming tha article about Madonna adopting I have a lot of mixed thoughts. Good for the kid; probably a publicity stunt (aren't they all?); yes she could probably help millions more kids by spending her money a different way... but who are we, or who is anyone, to tell someone else how to spend their money? kwim? I just hope they are all truly happy. |
