That is interesting.
But unless you drink a lot, not much enters the milk anyway.
I guess for the moms who go out drinking and or partying it would be good...
But if you're having a glass a wine or a beer with dinner, none of that will get to the milk anyway....so it seems like a good way to make money for the creator. Good for them.
I always just nurse as I drink, cause the alcohol, if any, won't reach the milk for about 2 hours anyway.

I have some of these and they really did not help me because nursing for Amelia is not just about the milk but about the closeness. So even if I drink, she wants to nurse asleep.
When I did use them, if I had two drinks the alcohol would show up. That is why I pretty much only have one.
If someone would like to try them out, I have some left over I think. PM, me and they are yours.

i dont really think thats fair, there were one or two times where when i was still nursing kail that i went out and had a few dirnks and then came home and didnt know if it was okay to nurse or not......i think it would have been cool to have them.
i think these are more for if you have had more then one drink, because one drink wont show up.....or that will tell you it is okay to nurse.

Wow that's really interesting because I sort of believed that unless you drank a lot it wouldn't show up in the milk. I only drank a glass of wine with dinner after the evening feed so I didn't worry about it. Also, at work, I run tests for alcohol all the time (although never tested milk) and I think would be difficult to create a home test that was very accurate IMO.

It is kind of like a litmus test. A chick from Austin, Texas created them. Figures. ;)

One of our old peds told me (when I asked.. lol) that the alcohol in your milk goes throught the milk like your blood.. after a while it disipates, so if you're not feeling drunk, then the milk is fine for the babe... but as long as you're feelign the effects of the alcohol then it's in your system/milk

I thought it was not to nurse for an hour per drink. So if you drink 2 glasses of wine then you have to wait 2 hours after you finished your last sip to nurse. Lorah, I never heard it takes 2 hours to get there. I wonder which one is right??? I go by the hour a drink rule and the if you wouldn't drive then dont nurse rule.

Breastfeeding and Alcohol
By Kelly Bonyata, IBCLC
Guidelines
* Current research says that occasional use of alcohol (1-2 drinks) is not harmful to the nursing baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”
* Many experts recommend against drinking more than 1-2 drinks per week.
* It is recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002).
* There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol, other than for mom's comfort -- pumping & dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk.
* Alcohol does not increase milk production, and has been shown to inhibit let-down and decrease milk production (see below).
* If you're away from your baby, try to pump as often as baby usually nurses (this is to maintain milk supply, not because of the alcohol). At the very least, pump or hand express whenever you feel uncomfortably full - this will help you to avoid plugged ducts and mastitis.
In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.
Always keep in mind the baby's age when considering the effect of alcohol. A newborn has a very immature liver, so minute amounts of alcohol would be more of a burden. Up until around 3 months of age, infants detoxify alcohol at around half the rate of an adult. An older baby or toddler can metabolize the alcohol more quickly.

The 2 hours thing was the amount of time it generally takes for the body to produce new milk and for that new milk to get released. Obviously if the baby is nursing more frequently it will go faster or slower if not as often though.
Basically, whatever the mom's blood alcohol level is, that is the % that potentially will enter the milk. So like this says above, if you are safe to drive, it's safe to nurse....for sure!!!! .08 is not much when it comes to % in the milk kwim? Which most people when having 1 drink with a meal never even come close to.
Not sure why this part of this quote is in there It is recommended that nursing moms avoid breastfeeding during and for 2-3 hours after drinking (Hale 2002) because none of the alcohol will be consumed by the infant if they are nursing at the same time the mother is drinking. It's not biologically possible.
Just wanted to add...I'm sooo NOT saying to go out and drink. I do think that it is something to be careful with for sure. Just wanted to make sure everyone knew that.

Maybe because some people drink over a few hours? For example, last spring I was at a party and a mom had an infant attached to her boob while she was drinking. We were there for several hours, and she was drinking the whole time. So no, while I take a sip of a margarita and my baby is at the breast, the alcohol isn't going directly into milk and into the baby right that second, but if I've got a baby on me for an hour or more and I'm drinking the whole time...

Ohhh duh, I totally wasn't thinking about drinking over a period of time like that. Probably cause I haven't done that in a long time! and wasn't even up to it when nursing a little one for sure. Good point...that would make total sense...
