HI Everyone.
I started feeling a little run down on Friday, and Saturday morning I had a bit of a sore throat. By Saturday night I could barely swallow, had a temperature of 102 (with really bad chills) and was up about every hour throughout the night. Did I mention that my head feels like it is going to explode???
Because flu season is upon us... I'm starting this thread asking that anyone share their "get well" secrets. Especially secrets that are safe for breastfeeding moms. I'm paranoid about taking anything other than a couple Tylenol- so if you have some secret remedy that you are willing to share- I would greatly appreciate it. It's SO hard to take care of someone else when you feel so crappy, you can barely move...
Also - not surprisingly, Baby Emanuel is sick too- but he doesn't have a fever. Anyone want to recommend anything for him??? I think he has a cold because he's been coughing, is extra tired, and has a lot of congestion.
Thanks in advance...

Kaisa - sorry you are feeling so rotten. I don't really have any remedies for you other than to push fluids. Drink as much as you can and try to get as much rest as you can. Let hubby know that he needs to help (in case he hasn't figured it out :) and let the housework go and just take care of yourself. Hope you and baby E are feeling better soon. Let me know if I can bring you some chicken soup or anything; I'm Rohnert Park every morning.

Sleep, lots of fluids (pretty much just water is what I do), Emergen C's; and so long as I'm not running a fever... extra trips to my acupuncturist! She specializes in Women's Health so she gives me herbs that are okay to take while nursing to help with things like sore throat, congestion, etc...
Sorry you and baby E aren't feeling well! Kick Eman to the couch and sleep in your bed with baby! I do that to James when me and one of the babes is sick. We all sleep better that way. And if you need anything just let me know!
I heard that airborne and Oscillo (can't remember the full name) work REALLY well when your throat is swelled up like that. I've been waking up with a lump in my throat every morning since tuesday :(

That soooo sucks when you are sick and you have to take care of a sick baby too! I hope both of you guys get better soon!
Salina started getting a headache and was weepy a few days ago so I made her take Airborne along with everyone else in the house and then some EmergenC too. She got over it in a day and no one else got it but the Airborne is for when you first feel something coming on, C is for whenever. We also like those Super C juices Odwalla puts out and it tastes better than EmergenC. Other than that I find if you drink tons of water it goes away a LOT faster, Brian never listens to me on the one and his crud will drag on for a week plus whereas I am over things super fast.
Oh, and I hear you about bfing and taking meds, I hate taking drugs but I cannot live with a headache so I will take Advil as I have a theory that Tylenol is akin to snake oil and sugar pills...

i dont know if i have much advice to offer but i hope you feel better soon. being sick and having a baby to look after is the pits.
i usually take tylenol for the fever and pain, acerola plus vitamin C (500 mg) and drink cranapple juice mixed with sprite. sometimes water just makes me feel worse.

I have a hard time drinking water anyway... A lot of people find this weird but I actually don' tlike water- it's so bland, that it's gross to me (I know many of you are going "WHAT??!!") I can force down a couple bottles at times like this- which is what I did... I have some of the Airborne stuff that I have taken since early Saturday afternoon (I didn't get my fever til that night).
Becky-- What is acerola???
Lynette-- I agree with you on the Tylenol. I don't think it event put a dent in my headache. Every time I stood up my head hurt so bad I thought I was going to puke.
Anna- Who is your acupuncturist? How much is it to see her?
Anyway, I am at work today (I still haven't accrued any sick time since my maternity leave... and had to use the last of my vacation when the daycare was closed on Columbus Day). I am feeling like crap still, and poor Baby Eman has SO much green snot up his nose... No wonder he was snoring!! There is loads of herbal tea here, so I am going to drink some chamomile and hope that helps me...
Kaisa: I don't like water either. Even bottled water I can only drink about half of.
HAve you been suctioning his nose? It'll help him sleep.

I suctioned his nose last night and again this morning before I left for work. He had sneezed and a TON of green snot came out. I panicked when I saw how much it was so I just wiped his nose with my shirt before he could sniff it back up. After that whole bit I sucked out about twice as much MORE out of his tiny little nose. Poor baby...
My friend at work just gave me 3 packs of Emergen-C I hope this stuff helps...

Lucca and I are coming down with that right now. I am downing all the water, vitamin c, and airborne I can to get it to disappear. Hope you two beat it soon.

I made an (raspberry) Emergen-C/Airborne cocktail this morning and am feeling WAY better already... My throat barely hurts anymore and I've been able to start coughing up all that nasty stuff that I couldn't before....

:woohoo :woohoo
Keep it up! Do that about every 4 hours and you'll kick the bug right out of you! FYI... the extra Vit C will also help Baby E but may also make him a little gas-y. And if you wanted to you can take echinecea; and even give it to Baby E too! If you just want him to get it thru your milk take a dose about 20 minutes before you nurse. But you can aslo mix 4 drops with some water (in a medicine syrigne or sippy cup) and let him take it that way too. It'll knock out his fever and help his nose/congestion.

Okay so looks like my feeling better was short lived. To make it worse, Baby Eman is still sick too, and we think he's getting worse. It's the saddest thing to hear your baby coughing... I think I am going to try and get him an appointment today- many of you recommended Pediatric Associates before right??? I want to make sure because I also need to make an appt. for his 6 month check-up/vaccinations.

It seems everyone is sick recently, I hope you guys feel better soon! Coughing seems to be the last step of being sick. My ped told me there isn't much you can do for a cough, there was a recent study how cough medicines don't work.
Just make sure he is totally better before giving him his shots :)

Kaisa: sorry to hear you and Baby E aren't feeling better. Yes... I take the kids to Pediatric Assoc (545-2545.... 1200 Sonoma Ave #6). Hope you two start feeling better soon!

Pediatric Associates has a walk in clinic first thing in the mornings. I think it's from 8:00-8:45. However, I've never had a problem getting a same day appointment. Unless you are wheezing when you cough, they won't really do anything for you. I did talk our doc into giving us a prescription for some codiene cough syrup for Caden, just so he could sleep. But it doesn't really supress his cough, just knocks him out and makes him cranky.
Hope you are both feeling better!

The drop in time in the mornings at Pediatric Assoc is for Established Patients only. You can't go in during that time as a new patient.

Wow- Pediactric Associates is SO great!! The squeezed him in despite having only one doc and the NP all day long-- and he was an new patient!!! They saw him this afternoon and it was just as I expected: a bad cold. No ear infections, or anything else bad enough to warrant any kind of a Rx. To top it off he now weighs 19lbs 1oz. I guess I shouldn't worry so much that he isn't getting enough to eat!! Thanks to everyone for the referral!!
Oh Anna- just so you know, I put your name on the paperwork as the person who referred me-- your the only person on here who's last name I know besides Jackie and Becky... :) I didn't want to write "Momof2, Jellybeanmichelle, daisydoc, and Megan124 referred me." LOL

Since we had to switch to Kaiser, I will really miss Pediatric Assoc. The doctor's are all great and Caden loves the NP, Alice. He calls her Aly :) I do have to say that there is one nurse there that I can't stand and I really think that she should not be a nurse anywhere but especially not in a pedi practice. After Dr. Gaitan left, we switched to Dr. Anaka and he is the first doctor that has not questioned Caden's diagnosis of autism but actually took the time to talk with me about treatment options and what he has currently read on the subject.

I know how you feel! I was so bummed that when Sevannah was born the insurance we had then wasn't contracted with Pedi Assoc so we had her at our family GP office. When we switched ins. when I got preggers with Jazper I made sure we could "put" the kids at Pedi Assoc!! My dad was a patient there; so were my brother and I; I use to work there! I just LOVE them!!! None of them are quick to judge; they listen and then talk to you on your level without making you feel like it's being "dumbed down" for you. And most importantly they RESPECT your decisions!!!! Our old GP faught with us b/c we didn't want to give Sevannah the Hep B immunization until she was older! And the only good excuse he had for giving it to them at 2 mos of age is that "it's hard to tell a 10 yr old that can talk back to you that they have to get a shot"! I was like "ummmm.... actually it's real easy. you tell them they don't have a choice and that they will sit there ass down and get the shot b/c I'm there mother and I said so!" He didn't like that response very much! LOL

Dr. Gaitan is now with Primary care assoc on Doyle park dr.
That's where I take Victoria.
So, it's a good thing Kaisa you didn't put my name down!
As for being sick and BreastFeeding. I've heard that if you get sick, the antibodies go to the baby, so when the baby does catch your sickness, they don't get it as bad.

Dr. Gaitan who is now with Primary Care is leaving in a few months! I was so diappointed when he told me last week at Tyler's check up and the shots..... My kids and I really liked him.
We were happy at Primary Care Assoc. , don't get me wrong, when Dr. gaitan left, we just made the move with him after seeing a few other Dr's at the Primary Care Assoc.
Anyway, Dr. Gaitain gave me some recommendations for other Drs. in his office.
Hope you and Baby E. are feeling better soon, Kaisa.

I wonder why he's leaving?
We see Dr. Brit, she was my dr as a child.
Dr. Smith was also my dr as a child.
Dr. Prosser is good too.

Does anyone know if babies can get bronchitis?
My poor little Peanut's cough seems like it is getting worse and it worries me because I seem to get bronchitis a lot after I get a cold. Last time I had it I was 8 months pregnant... Anyway his nasal passages aren't draining well either. He had FINALLY grown out of having a clogged tear duct about 3 weeks ago- but this morning I had to clean it out because it was glued shut again :( My poor Baby. He was so fussy last night too. I think I got like 3 hours of sleep and my not very dh ditched me with a fussy baby and went to sleep on the couch. I was ESPECIALLY pissed because he had taken a nap earlier - but hadn't allowed me to take one; AND I had to be at work at 6:30am and he doesn't go in until 9:30am. :hitchair To top it all off- he never works 8 hours either. He'll probably be home before me.

Babies can get bronchitis, although they usually get bronchiolitis. I think that is what it's called. The difference is where the inflammation occurs in your pulmonary system. Call Pediatric Assoc, they can let you know if you should bring baby E back in or not. And then call your DH and tell him you are the one takinga nap today and he can take care of baby E :)

Baby E sounds like he has some sinus issues like Lucca. She had the clogged tear duct problems and then grew out of them. That has happened to her, she has a cold and then the gunk starts coming out her eyes and gluing then shut or just being a big green gob in the corners of her eyes. Sometimes when that happens to her eyes it is just part of the cold and clears up on her own and other times it has been a sign of a sinus infection for her. They are all different. I don't know about the bronchitis thing though. It sounds like we have the same thing as you. Lucca has a terrible cough. I ended up getting way more sick than her. I can't kick it while she is just hanging on to her cough. She has always been that way though it is so hard for them to cough that crap up it just sits in there. Good luck. It takes a few sicknesses to realize what tends to happen when they get sick and what is normal for them and what is not.

sorry you guys are all sick! :( we're hanging in there. DH still fighting it off and I'm just dragging butt b/c Jazper's been up 3-4x a night to nurse for like a week now. Hope we all can get some sleep!
And Kaisa: don't hesitate to call Pedi Assoc! That's what they are there for and remember that now you're an established patient you can show up at their door at 8am and they'll see you!
