does anyone know off any excersize classes either at a gym or aywhere else? i really want to start working out (to lose weight not gain muscle) becasue im not disiplined enough to do it on my own at home. i have looked at some classes liek at the universtiy of sports but they are just so expensive. preferably one that i dont have to join the whole gym because i wont work out on machiens.

i am open to any type of class-yoga, strenthening. i want to know about jazzersize? does anyone take that?

I actually am a member at Curves... I'll give you the whole spiel from when I used to be a fitness technician there :)

It's a 30 minute workout.. part is aerobic and part is using hydrauling machines... but you only use the machines for 30 seconds at a time, then you do aerobics for 30 seconds, and back and forth.
It's AWSOME b/c it's only 30 minutes and you burn an average of 600 calories in one visit. I'mw anting to say it's only like 30 or 39$ a month (much less than most big gyms) and you can go up to 6 days a week, or as little as 1... they have good hours too, so it's easy to make it in. I'm a member there but haven't gotten to go in a while b/c I got lazy since I know noone there, but if you want to join up let me know and we can go together! That would be a lot of fun adn I REALLY need to start working out again.
My success story was pretty good... I started working out there when my sister was getting married... I was 17 years old and VERY athletically active. I had hit a MAJOR plateau and hadn't lost weight or gained muscle in months. I started ehre, 3 times a week, and lost 14 1/2 inches over all (thighs+arms+belly+hips) and ended up getting as far down as 103lbs. It was AWESOME and the workouts are great b/c you get what you put into it... if you're sore or sick or tired, you can do it a little lighter but still get in your workout (whereas for a spinning class, you may be more inclined to skip if you aren't feeling up to par, kwim?)
Anyways, if you wanna try it out, let me know. I can get you a free pass coupon and we can go together! That would be awesome!

I've thought about joining Curves in the past, but have back problems. Do they help you there if you have special circumstances like that? Which one do you go to, the one on Fulton?

sarah: Yes to fulton and yes to physical problems. I have a REALLY bad knee b/c when i was in highschool i disloacted it multiple times and had to do PT... b/c of that there are certain machines I can't do. ALMOST every machine has an "alternative workout" that you can do either on the machine or behind it which allows you to work the same muscles without the pressure on your "bad area"... for instance...probably the only thing you would have problems with would be the sqat machine.. I can't do it everytime b/c of all the weight going into your knee when you push up so i do it if i feel liek i can the first time, and once i get a ltitle sore or stiff feeling, i do squats against the wall. Plus b/c it's hydraulic there is a lesser chance of injury from the machines. It's not like you're lifting 40lbs right off the bat... if you push it REALLY HARD and REALLY FAST for 20 seconds, you could get to that weight, but the weight builds up with each pump of the hydraulic tube.. so if you go slow, the weight pressure dissipates before you actually feel it. If that makes sense.
If you wanna go for a free time, let me know! :)

Since I am just around the corner maybe I could watch Kail for the 45 minutes you'd be gone.

I tried Curves a few years ago, and while the program itself was nice It didn't work for me due to the hours (at the time DH was working from 6 til 6 or so each night) and the no child care... ( I just joined 24 hour fitness... hefty start up fee, but now locked into $20/month for however long I stay)

You could also try the YMCA... they have a lot of different classes, and you don't have to be a member to go, but I think their day pass fee is $15/day (or you could get a month pass for $65) and child care is $2/hour for the 1st child, $1 each additional child...

We went to the YMCA for a long while before we moved here and loved it. The nice thing is that we got to choose if we wanted to work out in the gym or in the pool on any given day.

Has anyone joined the Y here in SR? We are thinking of joining after the first of the year but want to check it out before we do.

I almost joined the Y back in texas, but a friend of mine had a REEEEALLY bad experience with their daycare, so if anyone is considering doing that, i strongly recommend going and checking out their daycare in advance... Obviously not all of them are like that, but it's better safe than sorry! :)

I was a member here for a year (until about a month ago). It's really nice, they just re-did the whole thing, there are a ton of machines, lots of classes you could go to, and nice pools. I don't know about their child care, though... The only reason why I stopped there was it's $40/month (was $35, and they upped it on my sil and me the 2nd month... ugh!) and the hours.. they're open until 9 pm most days, and 6-7 on weekends, and that just doesn't work for me (hence the reason I'm with 24 hour fitness now..lol)

but yeah, all in all, it's a real nice facility, and the people there are nice as well.

I'm at a small gym in Petaluma and I pay $40 a month.I don't do the childcare, I have my husband, Ken watch the kids. The reason I go here instead of some of the other ones is because they have an indoor pool. I really wanted a gym that offered that option and was not alot of money like some of the others. I did do the 24 hour gym before I had kids. They had alot of equipment, but there was no pool here in Petaluma and the start up fee was alot too. I;'ve heard good things about Curves.
Good Luck.

Angela,
I used to go first thing in the morning when they first opened(hubby would watch the kids since they were still sleeping), but lately I have been going when I can . I have not tried a class yet. I either ride the bike or swim, or do the tradmill. My husband,, Ken, works long hours and not around here , so I go when he can watch the kids for a hour or so. I need to lose about 10-15 pounds. That is my goal.
When do you go?

Same with me it just depends. I go in the mornings M,F,S,Su then on the other days I go in the evenings cause I work so I have to wait until my husband gets home. I do a mix of classes and working out on my own, weights and cardio. I shoot for going every day, but don't always. I really like some of the classes. I went to one on Monday and my ass still hurts, ouch.
