Family Adventure: Budding Biologists
Saturday, June 27, 2009, 9am-1pm

Track a mountain lion! Watch hawks hunt for gophers! Visit a redwood forest! In this outdoor adventure, led by Margaret Boeger, Pepperwood School Programs Manager, you and your kids will experience what it’s like to be a zoologist as we explore the rich wildlife at Pepperwood Preserve. On our hike we’ll learn to identify the local birds by sight and song, and will search for signs and tracks of coyotes, foxes, mountain lions and other mammals. If we’re lucky, we may even spot some secretive reptiles along the way. This event involves moderate hiking outdoors for several hours. Wear sturdy shoes, bring a hat, sunscreen, bottled water and lunch. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. Young children may ride in backpacks or hike (if they can walk up to three miles). Trails cannot accommodate strollers. Best suited for children over five years of age. Meet at Bechtel House. Registration begins May 27.

That looks like so much fun! I wonder, if we could get our hands on a couple of hiking back packs for Genna and Luke, if Matt would be interested... hmmm...

Are you going to be going to this, Leigh?

WOW! I didn't notice an age limit. This sounds like fun, but I would need an extra back to carry Billy in the Ergo.

It recommended ages 5 and I up I think it was...

here are the two things that I think rule us out: Young children may ride in backpacks or hike (if they can walk up to three miles).

I can see my kids quitting like a mile in and having a miserable time :( I cannot wear E for 4 hours!

LOL, my stamina isn't all that great, but I figure if we're nature hiking then it will be slow for the most part, stopping to listen and look.. I mean, 4 hours for 3 miles is a LOONG time.. so I'm thinking it's going pretty slow with a lot of stops...

The hilly part is what worries me lol. I don't do well going uphill at this point. Anyone who went to the Oakland Zoo trip should remember lol

I couldn't tell is it self paced or if we have a guide we are following who might want to trek on when we want to stop and stop when we are ready to move on to the next thing. For us it feels like it could go either way they would either absolutely adore it or complain the whoooooooooooole time :lol I think it sounds pretty fun but if it goes sour eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppssss!
