So Luke has had a cough the past couple of days, worse at night.. I just peeked at his throat and it looks like white spots, so possibly strep.. I called the dr and they don't have any openings today or tomorrow, and they suggested I go to urgent care instead... well, urgent care closes at 7 and Matt JUST got home (as I'm typing this) ... He said just take him to the er so he can get whatever meds he needs... I'm torn between er and urgent care in the am.. he just had such a rough night last night trying to sleep with the coughing and crying due to throat pain from coughing...

can you give him some "tylenol cold and cough" (tylenol, or motrin, and some cough meds) until morning? Warm mild beverage? I dunno, I think he'd spent hours and hours in the ER... is there a financial difference? Don't get me wrong I'd sell the farm for my kids but if the dif is ER or a more reasonably priced appt in the morning for a non life threatening something I'd probably wait :bag

there's no price diff... though I did just read on webmd that if there are other cold like symptoms (runny/stuffy nose, cough) that it probably isn't strep... so I think what I'll do is hop down to longs and grab some tylenol cold/cough and see how he does through the night and check again in the am, maybe call and see if the reg drs had any cancelations.. I'd rather avoid the ER myself...

Get him some honey sticks too... that always helps sooth a cough for Caden.

if its strep then i remember how terribly uncomfortable that was, take him to the ER tonight or in the am.....if he can fall asleep tonight maybe let him sleep but if he cant and obviously in pain then i would take him in.
FYI: do you take the kids to sutter family practice? if you call in the morning and ask for an advice nurse to call you back they WILL get you in. i learned that teh ppl in the front tell you that they can get you in, but when i asked for an advice nurse they got me an appointment ASAP for that same day.

I would probably wait until the am unless he seems worse in the night...I hope he feels better soon.

Well, I got him some cough&cold.. thing is, NOTHING says it's okay for under 4.. they *all* say "under 4: do not give, 4-5: consult physician before use, 6-12: 2 tsp" ... so I gave him 1/2 tsp... he still woke up a couple times coughing, but no crying along with it... He's asleep still right now, but when he wakes up I'll check his throat again... I'm really hoping the white I saw was just banana residue... lol

oh, also, aside from the crying while coughing when he woke up night before last he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort during the day, eats fine and no fever.. so signs point to no strep...

yeah cough syrup is no longer reccomended for under 4's, supposed to be ineffective so thats what the new labels are about...

today he still has the cough, not *quite* as bad, but no other strep symptoms so I think we're good... and hopefully he'll get better and none of the other kids will get it by tuesday!

flush him out with water :) Get that mucous thin to cough up easily and the germies peed out!
