I have a hard time choosing my all time favorite book....
it's a toss up between two...

Tuesdays With Morrie (http://www.amazon.com/Tuesdays-Morrie-Young-Greatest-Lesson/dp/076790592X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251238063&sr=1-1) - by Mitch Albom
(loved the book, despised the made for TV movie)

The Pilot's Wife (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FDFWHS/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0316601950&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0Q11S5XGJWX226NZ2W0Z) - by Anita Shreve

what about you....can you narrow it down to one favorite book, of all time?

The one that comes to mind immediately is House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. It has been one from high school that I really truly loved! I also really enjoyed The Other Boleyn Girl - the movie didn't even come close! I've read others since, but none that really stand out when I think of favorite.

Hmm thats a tough one I love James Patterson especially his Alex Cross series. So I'll have to think about which one is my favorite but right now I'm thinking big bad wolf.

When I think of my all-time favorite book, Where the Red Fern Grows is always the one that comes to mind right away. From the time I was in 4th grade, I loved that book!!!

Hmmmm... all-time favorite.

I think if I have to pick ONE book, I will go with the one that had the most profound, life-altering, paradigm-shifting effect on me (vs. being simply "enjoyable"). I was not the same person by the end of this book as I was at the beginning:

ATLAS SHRUGGED by Ayn Rand

there are so many books I love but if I had to gauge one by how many times I have read it, I guess it would be "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I even tried to read it in Spanish when I was taking Spanish classes, but that didn't go so well at the snail's pace I was going!

I also like "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by the same author.

I have no idea... I'll have to think about this and come back. But maybe Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.

:yeah You said it perfectly Leigh. I've read it 3 times and it's been a profound experience each time. Anthem (also by Ayn) was also fantastic.

For just pure enjoyment though I love the Harry Potter books and The DragonRiders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. I've read both series a few times each.

I've always had a tough time with this question - what is you FAVORITE book. It wasn't until rather recently that I think I narrowed it down to:

Earth Abides

There are a TON of books that I love for this reason or that, or in this situation, or another. But Earth Abides has really stood out to me for the past few years.

Hmm, I've been meaning to read Atlas Shrugged, I'll move it closer to the top of the list. I also really enjoy Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Some other favorites-The Red Tent, Poisonwood Bible, and Lamb.

I used to think it was Stranger in a Strange Land but I tried re-reading it a few years ago and couldn't get through it. I think I was going through a religion thing when I read it the first time. Otherwise, I don't know, there are so many good ones but I think if I picked on for sentimental reasons it would have to be the Narnia series because that was the first time I read a book as a kid and began my love affair with books :love

thanks for this thread... anyone want to loan me some good books? (seriously..) getting out of the house (besides to go to Costco) can be challenging and I am too cheap to buy online. Pls. pm me if I can borrow ANY of the fab books. (except Twilight, HP, and Red Tent... i have already enjoyed these.)

Not sure, I really just enjoy reading for the reading. I don't think a book has ever made a profound impact on me before, though after having Amelia, Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner was a book I am glad I made it through.

Brooke- I, too, loved Tuesdays with Morrie.

I have a hard time picking books, so here's some of my favorite authors:

Barbara Kingsolver (Poisonwood Bible, The Bean Trees, Animal Dreams, etc.)
Julia Alvarez (In the Time of the Butterflies, In the Name of Salome, Yo! etc.)
Gail Tsukiyama (Women of the Silk, Language of Threads, Night of Many Dreams, The Samurai's Garden, etc.)
Chitra Banerjee Divakuruni (Queen of Dreams, Mistress of Spices, Sister of my Heart)
Gregory McGuire (Wicked, Son of a Witch, A Lion among Men, etc.)

As you can see, I like to read about women's lives in different cultures with some historical context. All of these are excellent books/authors!

Jenny- I have several books you could borrow!

My favorite book is called Personality Plus by Florence Littauer. This book talks about 4 different personalities we all poses, some are more dominant than others. This book has helped me understand why my husband acts like he does and has helped us a lot with our relationship.
