How horrific. To hear her screams and be able to do nothing about it and what a terribly painful death. The poor woman, and those children, I am so glad they were able to get out, I hope they didn't have to witness all the cries from their mother :(

I have trouble on the construction zones everyday, I can see how this is a huge problem. the roads are uneven and force you rto be a wobbly driver, the roads are so narrow and the on ramps are soooo short you are constantly being cut off when trying to merge on. I have been avoiding the freeway due to the fears I have in the construction zone

That is just tragic :( I don't drive that area very much so I don't know what it's like right now.

We almost got 1 or 2 of those kids, but luckily they kept all the siblings together and sent them all to CHO.. I couldnt imagine just witnessing your mothers death and then being sepatated from your brothers and sisters, making the Dad have to split his time between the 2 hospitals.

I heard all the commotion on the freeway from our bedroom as I was laying down to nap before going to work. They also had a helicopter with a spotlight shining so I thought it was a chase...

We've been talking about this all day at work, it's so sad. Two of the people I work with were at the scene, horrific:(. I drive from RP to Windsor every day and the construction zone north of SR is scary to drive. Such a tragedy...

Oh my. Hearing the screams--that is just awful. I was just up there a 2 weeks ago after a long time and I thought it would be really bad at night. She probably had her mind on other things and then didn't have enough of a reaction time once she realized what was going to happen.

I agree about the road, it's scares me too. I made DH drive homes last night... we were coming from Healdsburg about 30 minutes before this happened :(

Those poor babies... at least they made it out though. SO sad about their mom

That is such a sad and horrible story. My friend was traveling on 101 north the time of the crash and said the traffic was stopped for hours. I feel so bad for those children.

John passed by right after happened. He couldn't believe all the people that stopped to watch. One guy stopped and didn't move in the middle of the road. Almost causing another accident. He tossed and turned last night, I wonder if he was having visions of it. Not sure.

I agree, that construction zone is way scary. Last week we were driving southbound and when we got on 101, cars were veering toward us due to the crappy ledge on the new roads.... this is such a horrific accident.

I didn't know about it until my Mom told me today.
The whole ride back home tonight, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I have to say, I really HATE, HATE, HATE the South Bound Freeway entrance to 101 at Mark West Road. It just shoots you out onto the freeway. There is no time to get up to speed once you come around the turn.

Who ever planned the on ramps during construction is a dumb ass!!!! JMHO.

How awful. A major reminder to slow down and pay attention when driving.
I hate driving on 101 construction zones. My mom and I were in a freeway accident and drove into the concrete divider after spinning. It was caused by a psycho lane changer. Luckily we were okay, not the car, but so so scary.

John said they were still investigating it when he went by at 7 tonight.

I have driven that stretch several times the past few weeks and it is UNDENIABLY UNSAFE. In fact, I think each time I drove up and down that area, the conditions/construction configuration changed.
About three weeks ago I was driving my mom's motorhome north on 101 exactly where that stupid bridge is. I nearly had a heart attack as the lanes narrowed down so incredibly tight that I actually took up all of the slow lane and was over the line into the fast lane. It was around 10:30pm so there weren't many cars out. I was SO THANKFUL no one was driving in the lane next to me b/c there was not room for myself and another car. I actually made a comment to my husband about how dangerous it was.
That poor family! So so so sad! I hope Caltrans makes changes to the lane configurations and the uneveness asap.

Yikes Jen, how scary. It would be a lot easier if things were clearly marked and people drove the recommended speed limit for construction zones.

Sometimes I just pray another car isn't next to me bc the only way to avoid injury is to take up part of the next lane, (and sometimes I don't have a moment to check my mirrors to make sure I am not going to hit another car.) I hope people don't get too nervous in that area now bc that can sometimes make things worse.

I know I avoid that area at all cost.

How sad :(

I definitely do not like all that they're doing. I drive to Windsor from off Airport allllll the time, and I just take Old Redwood there now most of the time. The cement barricades aren't THAT bad, but the uneven pavement is something I dread. It can totally jostle your car, even when going 55. Which is especially scary when there are cars next to you, PLUS the barricades. I hope they get most of that cleared up before rainy season starts :rolleyes

I read the article finally.
I really hope they find it was Cal-trans who was at fault. Then maybe a lesson will be learned and they will plan highway construction better.

I may not drive that section of the freeway, but I think we can all attest to how bad the pavement is right now.

Maybe they should of had it be just one lane in that area. :dunno

Does anyone know if they are setting up an account for the family or if there is anything SCM can do to help?

Debbie

I dont think it is Cal- Trans doing the job, more like a smaller company... their name is on the water tanks in the freeway just past the bridge where she crashed... something bros. I'm sure they are investigating to see wether they can procecute the construction company for her wrongfull death.

Caltrans spokeswoman Lauren Wonder said Cal/OSHA will be involved in the investigation. It monitors worksite conditions. The highway construction work is being done by Berkeley contractor O.C. Jones. Spokeswoman Lisa Larratt said the company will work with both state agencies on the investigation.

:yeah

We were coming home from camping last weekend and several cars swirved into our lane with the due to the pavement change.

My husband told me about this yesterday... he topped it off with "the kids got out with minor injuries".

Really, you think? They just listened to their mom scream to her DEATH.

I bawled for an hour... damn hormones.
