Hello,

I've been doing some brainstorming about cutting food costs and ran across two CSA's @ Laguna Farm and Orchard Farms (both in Sebastopol) and wondered if anyone has tried them or know of anyone who has. It looks like they give you a "box" of organic veggies for a certain price every week or every other week....

Thanks!
Beth

One of my co-workers' wife owns "Shea's Organics" and she delivered stuff to people within the office. She even brought some stuff in for people just to try/take home. I don't have any experience with the two CSA's that you mentioned but I can highly recommend Shea's. Their stuff is BEAUTIFUL and EXTREMELY fresh!! You can check them out at http://www.sheasorganics.com

My Mom was in one of these (not sure which one) and quit because they give you SO much so unless you have someone to share it with, or go through a lot of veggies every week, it may be hard to keep up. It was just the 2 of them so it may be better for big families or like I said splitting it with someone. You have to take the stuff each week even if you don't need it yet.

So do you get to choose the veggies/herbs that you want - or do they give you whatever they have??

my understanding is it is a X pound box of whatever is available, you don't pick anything (the CSA that is)

I would love to get involved on a CSA, when we have the $$, I was looking into a few others that aren't listed (will have to find them later) but the SHEA seems a bit $$... i think the others I saw were between 50 and 75/month....

We do the Laguna Farm CSA box every other week. We've only been doing it since the winter, so I don't know what it's like in the summer, but I wouldn't be worried about getting too much. We do eat quit a bit of veggies, but I guess it depends on your household.

I think the biggest adjustment is learning how to add new veggies into your cooking. - for instance, I've never bought fresh beets before, but I love them, so it was just a matter of finding a recipe for them.

You don't get to pick what's in your box, but you can trade for something else in their store if it's something you *won't* use. And when they're short on stuff to put in your box, they might put something else, like last week we got a bottle of organic asian paer/apple juice...mmmmm.....

We pay $16 every other week and Ashur loves to make the trip to the "barn."
So far it's been a good experience, but I hope the veggies pick up in the Summer.

They have a website
www.lagunafarm.com

On there they also have recipes for things you miht find in your box.
