Hi ladies,

Are any of you looking for a preschool or planning to? The Santa Rosa Mother's Club is having their annual preschool fair on Wed night. I've gone before and over 20 preschools were present. It is for members, but you're allowed to attend one meeting before being required to join.

Pm me for more specifics.

HTH,
Beth

I went to the preschool fair in 2005.
It might be great to go again. I'll see if my hubby wants to check out the schools too.

I'm going to this again this year, with Caden's preschool teachers :lol

It is a great opportunity to talk to the people that work at the preschools and get an idea of what their cirriculum is like and ask questions.

Caden's preschool is special ed but the teacher is encouraging me to get him in a community preschool a couple of days a week. She also told me to be prepared that by the time he reaches kindergarden, he won't qualify for services any longer, except maybe speech. I really want him to have at least a part time aide when he goes to K, just to help transition, so I hope I won't have a big ol fight on my hands.

I don't know what Caden's issues are but my oldest has been in special ed since K. I recommend keeping them in the system any way you can because as they get older, other issues come up. For us it all started with speech but then later (as the gaps in reading became more apparent) found language/learning disabilities, and still later visual/spatial perception issues with math (as they switched from hands-on to more pencil/paper math in the older grades). Now at 12 she has 'graduated' from speech and reading/language arts RSP, but is still in RSP for math, and now needs Occupational Therapy (probably should have had it all along) for handwriting/fine motor which became evident in the older grades too with her handwriting being stuck in about 3rd grade. My point is that usually if a child qualifies for one thing, there are associated things that may not be apparent when they are really young, just because of the nature of their development, so if you can keep them in the system with yearly IEPs even if it is just through speech, then you have opportunities to get them services later without going through the whole rigamarole again, you simply have them look at them and add something to the IEP as needed.

exactly. I can't tell you how many times we've been told J would grow out of his issues and his teacher last year told us she thought he was ready for full on K this year (he's in transitional which is like an extra year of preschool with a longer K ish day) and yet more "issues" keep cropping up! I kinda feel like a shitty parent but now that I see Karen's daughter has done the ebb and flow thing I don't feel so bad! J initially entered "the system" at 18 mo for gross motor issues, then those were above average and by 3 only qualified due to speech (dxed at 30ish mo) and then at 4/4.5 they put him in APE due to weakness in one side of his body, and now it is looking like he's got some defenant sensory issues/"issues" that make it hard for him to confidently interact within "real life" and now that he is doing more academic stuff that requires consetration/more demand to his eyesight the slight strabismus he had at 2ish is back... so yeah I also suggest finding some way to keep your foot in the door so to speak as he takes 3 steps forward 2 back one forward 3 to the side...
