Baby Eman went to the doc today because he was wheezing. Anyway they sent us home with a nebulizer and my poor baby HATES it. It is SO hard to get him to do it... but it looks like we have to get used to doing it because they prescribed like a months worth of treatments + a refill... :(
We weren't surprised though- since dh lived in a tent for the first few years of his life due to asthma...
Anyone else have any experience with giving an infant a nebulizer? I'm looking for tips/tricks that don't involve me holding him down for 5-10 mins. while he screams :mecry
no, but it breaks my heart that he has to do that :(
I never had breathing problems until I was pg with Brendan. I got pregnancy induced asthma and it never went away. I was using my rescue inhaler 5-6 times a day until a month ago when they put me on advair (short term) till i can get in for tests. :( Poor baby. give him a hug for me

I'm sorry Baby E has a wheeze! Do they want you to do the neb continually or just until the wheeze is better? Caden had RSV when he was about 10 months old, so we did albuterol with him (and still do) almost every time he gets a URI but we only do it while he is actually congested and wheezing. Not that you want to hear this, but Baby E will get more of the inhaler if he is screaming (taking deep breaths). When Caden was little, I had to sit him on my lap, pin him in and hold the mask over his face, while he screamed. Then he would be all jittery for about half an hour. I hated that part almost as much as pinning him down.
Hang in there... I know it is no fun to hold down your screaming child but give him lots of hugs and kisses!

Well I thought we'd just be doing it for a few days- but they gave us a HUGE supply (no joking like 100 treatments + a refill). He has to go back to the doc on Wednesday so we should find out more then. I'm trying to be optimistic!
I know what you mean about the jittery stuff- they warned us about that and it's worse than I anticipated it being. Emanuel is giving him his 3rd one today right now... Which is going much better than the one I gave him this afternoon...

You might want to call the office and ask how long they want you to give it to Baby E. That is the way Caden's RX came too, so maybe that is the way they always fill it??

He has the attention span of... well... an 8mo :D so after about a minute or two he's on to something else.
I put the mask over my face for a second and breathed in it to show him that it was okay... it seemed to help a little. I also rubbed his chest while I help him to try and comfort him- which worked for a little while too.
Megan-- I'll be really happy if they aren't expecting this to be an all the time thing. All that Albuterol was somewhat discouraging. :(

Did you mention the mold in the closet to the doc? Remember the story about my neighbor, their kid started to get asthma because of their house? Might be worth mentioning.
The only thing I know about the treatments is that ine of my mom's foster kids had to do them and he hated them too. In fact, he fought so much that his parents wouldn't give it to him because he fought it so muchand he ended up in the ER several times because of it.
Stuff like rubbing the chest always worked with Salina, she would be mesmorized by what we called "tickles", just lightly running your finger tips on her bare skin on her back, arms, face, etc. Alaina likes it too, she is just less patient so she only lays still for it right before her naps.

Actually my dh took him to his 9am appt. yesterday and then we met up (I was @ work) and I took him home for the rest of the day... but I'm sure he didn't mention it at all. Thanks for reminding me of that Lynette... I'll be sure to mention it when we take him back tomorrow....

Ya... mold can be a HUGE trigger for breathing issues. That would be important to mention to the doc b/c yes family history counts but triggers are more prominent.
