View Full Version : for those of you shopping for cameras...
I know that several ppl have mentioned in the last few months how they are shopping for cameras, and my friends/family are ALWAYS asking me about what cameras are best.
the BEST advice i can give people is to not fall into the HIGH MEGAPIZEL=MAGIC CAMERA trap.
Here's a great link by Ken Rockwell (A nikon insider) that discusses the Megapizel Myth (he just explains everything so much better than I ever could).
It's a great read and it really explains why you don't need to fork over $4k for a 15mp camera to get great photos.

here is another great one:

For reference, I haven't tried the $150 camera, but the more expensive one is an INCREDIBLE camera... it's the #1 used professional camera right now (I'm on 2 photo boards, and I'd say about 50% of the members use that, 35% use my camera (the Nikon D200) and the remainder are a mix between the Canon 1d and the Nikon D2x

Thanks for the info Jackie. I haven't decided what I am going to do yet. Dustin reformatted my memory card so my old camera is not giving me problems anymore. It would be nice to have a new one but I love the fact that my old one fits in my purse so I have it with me 24/7. I tried to buy the book you suggested at borders and ended up with a different one. I thought it was the same. It is Understanding Digital Photograpy by Bryan Peterson not Understanding exposure. I am currently reading it and then will decide if I want to keep my old one as my purse camera and buy a DSLR or just update my P&S. Im leaning towards the DSLR right now but I have to get Dustin on board. :tongue
Thanks again for your help!!
You can get a good quality DSLR without spending a small fortune.
I started out with a Nikon D50 and then to D200, but there is also the D70, D70s, D80 (new)
and then all the canon digital rebels, etc. (not familliar with those as i'm currently all nikon, lol)
but there are SO many benefits to being able to carry a camera with you at all times. My canon powershot is good for that, but the quality isn't good. I actually think it's exposure meter is off.
