Some of you have asked about getting a job through PG&E for yourself or SO. DH got an email from the company stating they sre hiring a lot of people right now bc they expect a lot of retirees this year.
Jobs range from clerical to linemen. Training is paid for and Class A license is helpful if you want to climb poles. All skill levels are encouraged to apply.
This is a bit unusual since generally it is hard to get your foot in the door with such a great company. Benefits are good, pay is excellent, and the retirement is generous.
DH loves his job and has been with the company for over 8 yrs. It is a good group of people and they take care of each other.
Here is a link that might help answer some questions:

Any idea the likelihood of laying off newbies? Part of me wants to move back to So Co but not for a job that will lay dh off as soon as we are getting settled again iykwim. This being the only parent during the week bit and then having to co-parent on the w.e sucks but his job with the county is only temporary, and we are in a 1yr lease until Oct.

Good question. All I know is PG&E doesn't do mass hirings, so they must really need people. Since a lot of old timers are leaving this opens things up for everyone else. I personally have never met or heard dh talking about guys in GC (general construction) or Division who got laid off.
Yes the hours can suck for lineman, especially if they get sent away to Madera or Fresno for special jobs, but it sure helps pay the bills.
We also know a few clerical and admin. staff that seem to be happy with their positions. As you can see on this link some jobs are in SF while others are further away.

Cool! I am going to tell dh. He's a journeyman electrician but he's always thought working as a lineman would be interesting work.

I have a friend who keeps talking about wanting to work for PGE. Where does he need to contact to see the open positions and find out what he has to do for the application proccess?

https://pgecorp.taleo.net/careersection/2/joblist.ftl I think. Though I didn't seem to see any real "entry level" type jobs.

As of yesterday, there were GC (General Construction) jobs listed on page 2. This is where a lot of people start out, like Frank. I now see they removed it. This is what I mean, having them post this is a VERY rare thing!
If anyone is interested, I still encourage you to check it out even if the GC jobs aren't listed, you never know. :fingerscrossed
GC includes line drivers, pole climbers, labor/traffic, etc....

Thanks -- he has been working in construction doing framework for buildings -- like welding the iron / steel together. Since construction in CA has tanked his work has been flying him to different states. They also cut his pay by $8/hr. (Can you imagine?!) and stopped having benefits. Luckily his wife (my BFF) works for Southwest and she has awesome benefits. It's just been hard on them because of their jobs... it's like they hardly see each other.
