Calif. City Tries Squirrel Birth Control

The Associated Press

Officials have tried poison, gassing and euthanasia to control a breeding frenzy among squirrels in a city park here. Now, they plan to give birth control a shot.

Under a new program to start this summer, squirrels in Palisades Park will be injected with an immuno-contraceptive vaccine to stunt their sexual development.

"We don't want to kill them if we don't have to," said Joe McGrath, the city's parks chief. "I personally like squirrels, but we also have to be receptive to the county's concerns."

Health officials say the squirrels, which number about 1,000 in the park, pose a public health risk. They warn that the rodents are aggressive and may carry rabies or host fleas that can spread disease, such as bubonic plague.

Since 1998, Santa Monica has been cited five times by Los Angeles County for squirrel overpopulation. But the suppression methods it has used, including euthanasia, have angered animal-loving activists.

City officials say the infertility shots offer a diplomatic solution.

The vaccine, developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, stops ovulation and lactation in female squirrels, and testicular development in males. The shots, running $2 to $10, have no side effects such as swelling, said James Gionfriddo, a USDA wildlife biologist.

Santa Monica would be the second city in the state, after Berkeley, to try the immunization program.

Animal activist Catherine Rich said she supports the vaccine program but believes any health risk posed by the squirrels is overblown.

"There is not a pressing threat of squirrels attacking people," Rich said, "so I don't know why the county is getting their panties in a bunch."

omg, how weird!
Although, Squirrels can be vicious.
JR went to Kent State for college and there were CONSTANTLY people being sent to the ER for squirrel bites b/c there were so many trees around and they would get too close the animals.

How strange that they really don't go into how it works? Does the shot last their lifetime and it is a catch and release thing? Wonder what the side effects are that they haven't tried it on pets yet?

In Chico, there are squirrels everywhere. I used to park under this one black walnut tree and a frigging squirrel was always throwing stuff at me from the tree.

reading that this is Santa Monica doesn't surprise me at all, there are squirrels everywhere. Now what happens when all these squirrels get old and start to die off...do they bring in new one to repopulate the park again?

Not sure what will happen.
I remember at McDonalds when I was a little girl there was a grassy area where all the squirrels would wait for french fries. There got to be so many of them..squirrels...that someone ended up doing something with them and they started to be fewer and fewer. Eventually they were all gone. I was sad, but then I was not a mommy worried about her kid getting bit while trying to feed them. Maybe soemthing like this article is talking about was done there too.
TO this day there aren't any squirrels left on that grassy area. Hmmmm

my guess would be that they would only use the B/C on a portion of the squirrels, and allow the smaller % to continue to populate the areas

Ya, I can't see all of them vanishing. I like them. They are cute. At a distance though.
