Lynette, I started a new thread for this so it wouldn't get missed in your Leopards thread:

I'm not sure *exactly* what the greens leafy things are, but I would just cooked them like you would greens - you can steam them or saute them in a little butter and garlic and add some cream, or chop them up and add then to a quich, or even chop them up and add the to a salad (or anythiing else really.) You can also google for recipes for green and you'll get 10254682511 recipes pop up :)

So, what do you think of the farm and your bin so far?

Are you doing it once a week or everyother week?

I think this has been our best week so far. I was really surprised to get the mushrooms (I don't know why.) Everything is organic and if it's not grown on their farm, they buy it as local as possible, except for the madarins they sometime get from down south, and the bananas (in their store) come from Mexico. I want to try their bread sometime soon - and I can't wait until there is more fruit availble....mmmmmm....peeeeaaacccchhheeess......

Some other cool things we have gotton in the past include:
A sugarpie pumpkin
a butternut squash
organic asian pear/apple juice
sutsama madarin oranges

and I LOVE the salad mix....It's very tasty!

okay, I told Matt if he doesn't fix the gate for the dogs in the back yard this weekend (so I can have some dog-free backyard to garden in) then I'm gonna sign up for this... sounds very good!

I like it but the this is only week one so I dunno what is coming next week but I did sign up for weekly bins. Part of me likes that it is different stuff than what I would normally but I do hope it isn't leeks every week either ;)

I didn't get to see the rest of the farm though, I wonder what they have planned for the summer? I have a small garden myself so just wondering if they plant the typical summer veggies for this area because I might have to put my account on hold over the summer.

Hey Stacy, was this one of your pick up weeks? It seem like quite the haul this week: salad mix, carrots, sweet potatoes, kiwis, collard green, beets, broccoli, I had a hard time getting it all in the bag this time. Do you know what kind of stuff they have in the summer? I tried emailing them to see if there was anything I should plant less of in our own garden and the guy wrote back saying I should just plant flowers :lol

Anyone know of a good local source for eggs or cheese? Part of me would love to be able to support the little guy especially since the quality is usually so much better but with the prices of gas I just can't drive all over the place :(

This was my pick up week as well - very good hual for sure!
I have no idea what they have in the summer. But I'm hoping since the weather is nicer, the bags should be good from here on out..
We made a huge stir fry last night and it was VERY yummy!! I'm loving all these fresh organic veggies!
I too would love to pick up local eggs and chees/milk. Let me know if you find out anything.

This is what I found :) She is right down the road from Laguna so let me know if you want her email:

Our chickens are our pets and were all hand raised. We have 3 roosters and 14 hens. They get scratch feed, mash, pellets, garden scraps, food scraps, bread, etc. They have access to about a 1/2 acre of grass and trees and all the bugs & worms they want.

Our eggs are collected 2x a day and we do not wash them until they are purchased. The natural coating is what keeps them fresh. We do not coat our eggs with any commercial products when washed. Most eggs are washed in bleach and then rubbed with oil or an "egg coat" and almost all eggs in the supermarket are around 30 days old by the time they get to the consumer.

We do not force our chickens to lay (artificial lighting, etc.). They are all young (they will turn 1 year old on May 28th) but we still got quite a few eggs during winter. Not all chickens are dormant during winter. It depends on flock size, age, housing, breed, etc. I am a believer that if they get a proper diet and are happy, they will be healthy and good layers. Our chickens should stop laying during their first molt which will be around November of this year.

You are more than welcome to come see them.

I would like her email... I'm not a big egg person but my mom grew up on a farm and really loves fresh eggs.

What do you guys pay for your Laguna Farms stuff (if you don't mind my asking...?) As it gets warmer I tend to crave fruits and vegies so much... and if they have fresh peaches then I'd REALLY be interested because they are my absolute favorite!!

It is $16 a week but you can sign up for only twice a month if you want. The only thing is they don't tell you what is going to be in there but so far every week there has been some fruit (oranges, grapefruit, kiwi) but veggies are the majority of the bin. Either way, it is a full grocery bag of stuff and all organic so defintely under what you would pay at the store. I was wondering if other local places with a similar program have an actual list or if you get to pick what goes in there? Anyone know, there were others mentioned in a previous thread?

what is the $75 deposit? is that applied toward you $16 every week/other week? or do you get it back if you cancel?

I think the way it works is that they don't refund it if you cancel before three months but if you cancel after that they take your last bill out of it and refund the balance. I think it is mainly to avoid people joining and then not paying since they bill you rather then pre-pay.
