I don't know anything about meth, so I'm curious... Did she have a TON in her system for enough to be passed through that would kill him, or is it just because he was so young that his system couldn't handle any? I know any answer is pretty much speculation, but I'm curious. I know if you drink you're supposed to pump and dump, but if you didn't, would enough alcohol go through the BM to make a baby drunk or give them alcohol poisoning? Would you have to drink a massive amount for that? Did this woman have to do a ton of the drug for it to kill her baby through BM or is it just because he was a baby and couldn't handle even the slightest amount?

I have no idea about any of that. I assume that if you drink and don't pump and dump that your baby will get the effects of alcohol, and if you consumed enough, it could pass through and give them alcohol poisoning, but I don't know. I'm going to see if I can find the history on this since it happened back in NOvember, there's probably something else out there.

Either way, if you are tweaking from meth around your baby that in itself is a recipe for disaster. And did she stop while she was pregnant only to start up after she had him? Sounds like a winner all around.

with drinking you don't nessasarily have to pump and dump, your BAC is babies or something like that so yes if you are drunk baby would be too but if you are *drunk*, truely drunk I don't know that I would feel comfy nursing from the breast even if the milk itself was fine just because you would be "out of it" and might drop the baby or otherwise be unaware of your spacial awareness to be caring for a little baby.

Erm yeah I am pretty sure there is no such thing as "a little bit" of met or being a social meth user like with alcohol where having a glass or two of wine or a mixed drink with dinner is socially acceptable etc..

So looks like she used while preggo... Found this:

Also, I am not up on my drug use, so don't know if meth is inhaled, injected, smoked, whatever so don't know if her daughter had it in her hair from having it actually in her system or from being around fumes or whatever.

I didn't read the article but the hair can show any drugs that have been "in your system". Watched enough CSI type stuff to garner that tidbit. That is how teen drug tests/random drug testing at work using hair work, the hair "tells a story" of what they have or have not been doing and you can tell how long ago it has been because it is tainted when the drug was used and then if out of the system the hair is "clean" in that spot.

You can use meth any of those ways. Most tweakers prefer IV though.

I read that article the other day. This made me really sad. Meth use is an epidemic in the US and abroad. Unfortunately meth+sex=often unwanted pregnancy. Meth is a very insidious drug. It can be smoked, snorted, or injected. It is also relatively inexpensive- the poor man's heroin or cocaine. It makes users feel invincible by shutting off dopamine receptors. Addiction happens because the body eventually needs more and more to get the same effect as the first few hits. The Meth-Momma probably thought her baby would be okay or didn't think the drugs were a problem. Meth users as a group are not generally as well educated. It is a drug that has hit the poor especially hard. Those users who are educated abandon their reason to the drug. I'm surprised she could carry a baby to term and then care for the child. Meth ravages the body and the mind. Drugs, unlike alcohol, take weeks and even months to get out of your system. Personally, I'm avoiding alcohol while breastfeeding and I've never taken drugs and don't plan to in the future. I wish people had to pass some sort of test and have continuing education to be parents. It is the children who suffer in cases like this.

So sad :(. Unfortunately growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, I was exposed to people who were high in my neighborhood. A lot of them had kids and babies while they were still using drugs.
