Yep, this is what we did yesterday!
The entire county of San Diego, parts of south Orange and Riverside counties, parts of Arizona, and northern regions of Mexico were all left without power starting Thursday, Sept. 8th at about 3:30pm. Originally they were projecting power be restored sometime before the weekend was over, but they worked hard and through the early hours of the morning and the last of the SDG&E customers had power returned by about 2:30am.
We got our power back on at 2:30am. We were of the last to get power restored.
It was pretty crazy. All gas stations were closed, all fast food places closed (that didn't matte to us though), most grocery stores had lines out the doors with limitted people allowed in at a time, but only up until the sun set. All traffic lights were dark, they weren't even flashing. Everyone was trying to use their cell phones too, so it was hard to even get a signal, and when we did it might ring for a second and then the call would get dropped.
One family I know had to evacuate because their 1 year old is on dialysis so they needed to get someplace where they could keep his treatment going. :( They are okay though.
The freeways were stopped, accidents, it was really a strange day/night.
Anyway.... just thought I'd share.
