View Full Version : Do not EVER go to Smile Care

Smile Care is a large dental/orthodontic/oral surgery clinic on the corner of West 9th and Stony Point Rd (right next to the Stony Point Grill).

My insurance company sent me to this place to get my wisdom teeth out. I cannot express in words how completely disgusted I am with this company. My treatment was beyond sub-par. This place is best described as a butcher. Or, when I am feeling generous, a chop shop.

I have moderately severe TMJ (lockjaw). I had four impacted wisdom teeth exacerbating the TMJ and causing serious pain throughout my mouth because of the crowding issues. They told me that the surgery was going to exacerbate my TMJ and that I would probably be in a lot of pain. They did not go over any options with me to have my teeth removed in stages, and they refused to give me stronger pain medication than regular Vicodin. Also they only gave me 20 Vicodin, which is enough for about 24 hours *if your pain is minor to moderate* which mine was/is not.

Their bedside mannar left a lot to be desired. It was clear that I was just a number to them. This I do not blame on them as they are a large clinic and I do understand that it can be hard to give individualized attention when you have so much to do. Still, I think they could have been a lot more sensitive to my needs and fears about the surgery. Basicly, they simply went over the risks and that was that. They also told me to pump and dump which is ridiculous -LOTS of nursing women I've known have gotten their wisdom teeth removed without any problems, and general anisthesia is not contradicted in nursing (what do you think women who have emergency C sections do?)

After it was done (I essentially blinked and it was over, there was no counting from 100, no warning before they put me out), they stuck me in a wheelchair and sent me on my way. They did not make a post operative appointment for me, or tell me I needed one. They did not go over aftercare with me, they merely handed a sheet to my husband which I just happened to come across after I came home -and not before I laid down for a minute and rinsed my mouth a little, before I was supposed to.

Once I was home, I took two Vicodin still hoping it would be enough. When the Novacaine started to wear off, the pain was so intense all I could do was cry. I couldn't even drink a milkshake it hurt so bad to even open my mouth. I spent the next few hours at Kaiser getting stronger pain medication, which thankfully my regular doctor was kind enough to give me.

Since then, I have been recovering very slowly. The swelling didn't go down until late yesterday afternoon. I've been running a fever. The pain is only manageable because I am taking Percocet every 4 hours, and 800mg of Ibuprofen every 6, and icing my face every hour. I even went to the ER at one point because I didn't know if it was normal to be in this much pain after 3 days (the people at Kaiser seemed to think it is normal).

So, I called my dentist who said they'd prefer to have me go back to Smile Care for a post Op appointment -you know, the one they were supposed to make for me but never did. I called Smile Care. They said they can't fit me in until Monday. I asked if I could be assured that it's safe to wait until Monday and they started aruging about why they can't see me until then, instead of answering my question. Then they said they'd "fit me in between surgeries" on Monday. EXCUSE ME? They won't even make a ****ing appointment for me? "No, we don't do that. There is time between the consultations and surgeries, but you may have to wait about a half hour." At that point I said plainly that I would not be coming back EVER.

I called my dentist and explained the situation, begging the receptionist not to send me back to that butcher! She was like, ok, we will see you, but your insurance may not cover it. That's fine, I'll pay full price to see my much more patient friendly private practice dentist. She asked that I get the x-rays from Smile Care. So I called Smile Care again, and they *refused to release the X RAYS to me* Which I am pretty sure is illegal. Their excuse is that they sent the x-rays to my insurance company, which probably IS true but I doubt that they didn't make a copy. And, if they didn't make a copy, that's simply incompetant. Seems to me you would always need to have a copy of x rays on file, should they get lost in the mail or who knows what.

Also Smile Care, when they called me to confirm my appointment, told me that my max co pay with my insurance plan was $300. In actuality it was $1500. The surgery co pay for me was $1,000. Who knows if they are lying or if I am getting screwed there too. Frankly I don't even want to pay them after the way they treated me, but my credit is already bad enough and the mere thought of having them calling me should my account ever go to collections makes me shudder.

So, long story short, Smile Care's practices are questionable at best. They are not competant, their bedside mannar is atrocious, their staff and receptionists are rude, they are unorganized, and frankly, I am worried about the safety of their patients. I cannot imagine how bad off I would be if I were not able to get the proper pain medicine from Kaiser. How would I take care of my children or function in my life if I were in that kind of pain all the time? The fact that they would do that to someone, without explaining to them just how bad it was going to be and then leave them high and dry after a surgery -no follow up care whatsoever -is absolutely shocking.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this.
I am glad to hear your swelling is going down though.

As for the medical bills, My daughter's medical billing office put her bills onto my credit report. I contacted the 3 credit places, Equifax, etc... and they removed all medical collections from my report. Needless to say, all of her bills are up to date now.

I've heard that it is illegal to put any medical bills on your credit report.

It's not illegal to put medical bills on your credit report, not as far as I know anyway.

You know, it's not that bad for me since I have alternative places to go, a good dentist and medical doctor, I just worry about the poor Smile Care patients who have no one else. It's clear that Smile Care caters to lower income families.

I have actually had several people tell me the same thing about Smile Care.
The most recent horror story told to me by a friend was one so similar to yours that it is quite scary! Thanks so much for the warning and so sorry you had such a bad experience! Amy

Smilecare was the only provider with our old dental insurance and Scott had some dental work done there. His problem wasn't as involved as Lindsay's but he definitely had the same type of experience. Subpar work, rude people in the office, they sent us to collections for $13 before they even sent us a bill. Fortunately for us, we now have different dental insurance, Scott found a new dentist he really likes and we now have had to pay twice to get the same tooth fixed.

I've heard that it is illegal to put any medical bills on your credit report.

It is legal for a medical office to send an account to a collection agency and for the collection agency to report a deliquent account to a credit reporting agency.

omg, that's AWFUL!!!!!!
I'm so sorry you had to go through that :(

And by the way, I used to do volunteer work in the records dept of a VA med center in PA and it IS illegal for them to not release your records to you. And there is legal action you can take on that. My mom works in that kind of stuff all day, I can find out some more information from her if you want?

wow, that's so tricky how they work around that

A medical office can report directly to the credit reporting agency, most places just send deliquent accounts to someone who specializes in trying to collect that type of money. That is SOP for most places that collect money; like a credit card company for example.

You can call your ins co and talk w/them about what they paid the dentist, and what you are supposed to pay... let them know you think they might be trying to over charge you... sorry you went through all this!

Well, they said that they would release the records to me AFTER my insurance company sent them back. I'm not sure if that's illegal or not, I think that it might be though. I've also never heard of any company sending out x rays without making a copy first. If that IS what they did, that's SO irresponsible.

I am going to launch a complaint with the better business bureau and the ADA.

Poor Lindsay... So sorry that happened to you. Do you/your family need anything?? Dinner perhaps to make your recovery easier?

Note about Dental insurance - it usually sucks. There are limited dentists who take insurances so you end up selecting a dentist because of the insurance and not because it is the best care for you. I have opted not to have dental insurance so I can stay with my family dentist. If you only go for routine stuff it's not a big price difference but if you need major work then the insurance is nice - assuming you can get good care!!

Lindsay - I'd document what you have gone through and make a formal complaint with Smile Care.

I just filed right now with the BBB.

I do not think I can file with the dentistry board but I am still going to try. I don't think Smile Care has done anything that is actually *illegal*, not sure if the witholding of the x rays and misquoting their prices are actually illegal, since they are going to give me the x rays eventually (supposedly) and they did tell me the acual co pay price before the surgery.

So sorry you had to experince a mess like that. Hope you are feeling better soon. Good for you for taking action and not saying its okay to be treated like that. Make sure you make copies and have dates on everything that you file.
Good Luck.

Lindsay-Sorry your experience was soo bad.

On that note does anyone have any thoughts on Western Dental is Santa Rosa. Them and SmileCare are the only two places not in SF for ortho work thru California Children Services. We need consult to see if Jessica qualifies and one of those two places does the evaluation and the work.

Oh that sucks Lindsay :( They sound like they really screwed things up!

Lorrie- I had my wisdom teeth pulled by Western Dental about 11 years ago and although the procedure was ok, I went back in about 3 days later because I thought I pulled a stitch. The dentist (different than the one who did the procedure) looked in my mouth, took a synringe and filled it with perioxide and cold tap water, and started squirting it into one of the holes onto the naked nerve. It hurt so bad I started squealing and tried to push him away so he jammed the plunger down all the way before I could protest more. I screamed and started crying like a baby. He wrote out a scrip for Codeine, tossed it to me, and walked out without ever having said a word. The assistant just stood there staring at me with her mouth open as I bawled. I am not a weenie when it comes to pain either.

As a side note on dental insurance, you can often find a good place who will take what your insurance offers and then you have to come up with the rest since they are considered out of network. No one is contracted with my husband's insurance but everyone takes it, I just have to pay the balance.

i haven't needed anything major recently thank goodness but all this info is good to know. We got very lucky in finding our dentist. I got a letter in the mail right after we moved to this house, found out he took our insurance and he is wonderful. A very kind and gentle man.
