How much do you tip your stylist and on what bill amount?
Just for a cut.
I think I tip too much so I want to see what everyone says.

View Full Version : Hairstylist tip?? Luckylove 03-27-2007, 02:21 PM How much do you tip your stylist and on what bill amount? Just for a cut. I think I tip too much so I want to see what everyone says. becky 03-27-2007, 02:26 PM i have no formula...i tip 5-10 for just a cut and 10-15 for cut and color. But i pay 55 for a cut and 95 for cut and color. meeg124 03-27-2007, 03:15 PM I usually tip 20%. Lorah 03-27-2007, 05:59 PM I wish I could help. I actually have Travis cut my hair. I only had my hair done twice at a salon, it turned out crappy...so I never went to anyone else again. Kellie_MO5 03-27-2007, 07:13 PM Well, I don't pay to have my haircut, and when I do it's just a flat rate w/tip included (usually about $90 for a cut, color, style at a friends place in sebastopol... but now that my sis is back in town I will be getting my hair done for free again...lol)... I think I would tip about $10 for a cut and style, and $15 for cut/color... I would say the 15% applies LMS 03-27-2007, 07:19 PM you said you are paying $45 for the cut, right? I'd say tip $10. My3sonsplus1 03-27-2007, 07:51 PM oh Lorah or Kellie I need the inside info. on your "hairstylists" though I guess having Lorah's dh cut my hair might be weird :lol? I just want a trim and don't have a gazillion dollars, my dh won't cut my hair the little stink! karen-clark 03-31-2007, 12:17 AM OK I go to Great Clips and they get about 3 bucks for a $15 cut. Call me cheap! And even that I don't do very often so I feel like I am being pampered. LOL! My3sonsplus1 03-31-2007, 08:26 AM OK I go to Great Clips and they get about 3 bucks for a $15 cut. LOL! my kind of gal there Karen :) colleen&Kail 03-31-2007, 11:48 AM i have no formula...i tip 5-10 for just a cut and 10-15 for cut and color. But i pay 55 for a cut and 95 for cut and color. :yeah Lynette 03-31-2007, 01:58 PM My best friend is a stylist who rents a chair and sets her own rates so I tend not to tip a whole lot since I know it goes right into their pocket and most don't claim cash payments on her taxes :bag Not like a waitress who gets crap wages and really needs the tips as part of her wage. Of course, I haven't colored or done much of anything with my hair since I had Alaina since I am bf'ing and not making as much money so tips are a moot point ;) LMS 03-31-2007, 02:28 PM yeah, when Jr's godmother does his hair, we don't tip her b/c all the $$ she makes is hers, But when i go to a salon i tip b/c they only get a %. I do the same for massages. When I go to a spa, I tip. When I hire someone independently, I don't. karen-clark 03-31-2007, 02:57 PM OK i don't get it what do you mean the $ is all theirs? Don't they have to pay rental and other expenses? I am confused. Don't all stylists expect a tip? LMS 03-31-2007, 04:31 PM Some people rent a chair at a locaiton which is SUUPER cheap. For my examples: Jr's Godmother comes to Jr's grandmothers house and cuts everyones hair. All that money is hers. She pays nothing to use the location And when I hire an independent Massage Therapist, I either go to their home or they come to mine (although if they come to mine I always tip a little for gas, travel, etc) I just don't like the fact that EVERYONE has to be tipped anymore. Lynette 03-31-2007, 04:36 PM OK i don't get it what do you mean the $ is all theirs? Don't they have to pay rental and other expenses? I am confused. Don't all stylists expect a tip? Well, at chop shop type places like chains they are employees getting paid an hourly wage so they don't have to rent a chair, they don't have to set appointments, they don't have to pay for products, advertising, etc. People who rent a chair pay their rent and sometimes shampoo is covered but usually have to pay for color, their own tools of the trade, build up a clientele who often move with them if they move salons, that kind of thing so if no one makes an appointment with them, they don't get paid but they set their own rates so if they feel like giving themselves a raise, they can. I think tipping started with the service industry because the wages are/were so low but if the person owns their own business, it is a little different although I think you are right, they have all come to expect a tip although it used to just be a kind of "thank you" for a job well done. I mean, if you make a $200 sale in your business you get a percentage but do you expect a tip? If my friend does someone's hair for $200 (which is totally possible with a cut, color, and foils on long hair) sure she has some expenses that cut into that but most of it goes home with her so does she *need* a tip to make a decent living? Not really because she determines her hours, her rates, how many/what kind of clients she sees, how fast/slow she can work to cram in as many people into her work day if she wants more money, doesn't claim cash payments on her taxes, etc. karen-clark 04-01-2007, 12:30 AM Honestly tipping is so confusing I wish people just charged what they were worth and do away with tipping all together. You'd rate them by not going back if they stank or referring others to them if they were good! Stacey 04-01-2007, 01:36 AM i have no formula...i tip 5-10 for just a cut porcupine 10-15 for cut porcupine color. But i pay 55 for a cut porcupine 95 for cut porcupine color. Okay... this must be an April Fools thing huh..? I was reading this thread wondering what monkey heck a "porcupine" cut & a "monkey" cut was. & it kept getting wierder. I thought I was loosing it. But I realized it was after midnight & now April 1st. Very Funny :) |
