I was worried about that, cause if I can't get into a book I just can't.

Did you like it Stacey? How are you doing Megan? I have tried getting into it but was having a hard time, don't know if it is the book's fault or not. I do think the author's way with words is amazing seeing that English is not his native language!

Honestly, I hate it and I'm not going to be able to finish it. I appreciate the prose but I can't get past the fact that Humbert is such a freaking perv. The whole rubbing against her on the couch scene totally did me in.

Hmmm....haven't gotten that far yet, maybe the book is so high up on book lists because of his writing style rather than the story??? Darn it.

:yeah... he just keeps wanting to go to the beach with her mother and her and sneak off to fondle her. Sneaking in little caresses in the car... it is just... yuck to me. It reads as a diary of a pervert, today i fondled, her yesterday I fondled her tommorow I might fondle her. The writing style I think is part of my issue I guess but really it reads to me like a teens diary o' perversion. There doesn't seem to be much else to it... when I first stared I thought I might have been reading the wrong book it was that hard to even try to get into...

Yeah... when I picked up the book I was afraid I had the wrong one. I was supprised that a mom's club would have picked a book about a pedophile... But I do like the way it's written.

I've wanted to read this book for a long time and I knew what it was about but it is just much more intense/graphic than I imagined. Plus I didn't realize Lolita was 12! For some reason, I thought she was more like 17 or something.

exactly. i actually enjoy "true crime" stories usually but the way this is written (I guess dairy form vs. reporting style) is blech, for me. I thought it was more a "forbidden" love going into it I guess?? Not some older man getting his giggles off literally bumping into a 12 yo.

I agree with all your comments. I am able to get through it though. I was very shocked that it is thought of as highly as it is.

Well, it is past May 7th so I am wondering how many of you didn't finish like me? I just couldn't do it, like someone else said, I could appreciate the prose but not only was it disturbing but kind of boring.

I did just get a bunch of new books on Amazon including the 2nd runner up in our poll, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and finished that one in like 3 days. It was pretty good, the Asian culture interests me though because I don't know much about it and it is so different than ours, but I did think the ending was abrupt. Anyone want my copy? I tend not to hold onto books and read them again.

I didn't finish Lolita either and in fact it is AWOL in our house somewhere.
I'll borrow your other book if you feel it was worth a read :)

I liked it, I liked Memoirs of a Geisha better but I will bring it with me the next time I see you :)
