Okay... my seasonal allergies have started and they make me m-i-s-e-r-a-b-l-e! Before I was pregnant I used Allegra (fexafenadine) and Sudafed (pseudophedrine) and was able to control my allergies and symptoms pretty well. Last year I just suffered through with nothing while I was pregnant. However, I am no where near as pleasant a person when sleep deprived or when suffering from allergies and the combination right now is not good. I looked up both those meds that I used to take and they are supposedly safe to take while breastfeeding, but may cause drowsiness, irratibilty, or agitation in the baby and may affect milk supply. I am NOT willing to take those risks right now. Now to the question....

Does anybody know any effective allergy relief techniques that do not pose risk to the baby or breastfeeding? I'll try anything!

while BFing Myah I took Clarinex nasal spray and sudafed (red tablet). I had no trouble with either of them. My allergies are going nuts on me since yesterday so I'm about to go to target and get sudafed myself so i can get some relief.

I was told that sudafed (at least the good stuff you have to get from behind the counter now) can dry up your milk and can act like a mild stimulant to the baby. So make sure you ask the Dr. before you take anything.

When I was sick recently with an awful cold I asked what was safe to take and I was told my the Dr. Tylenol is the safest thing to take and I should try to tough it out before doing anything else. But then....this doc was very natural.....sooooo that is not to say that something out there for you would be just fine and I just dont know about it.

Good Luck.

i had no idea there is more than one kind of sudafed now so yesterday i found out that i had to be sure and get the one behind the counter. i took my dose of sudafed and claritin at midnight and am feeling so much better now.

Shelsea is too. somehow she got all stuffy the same time i did and now that i'm feeling better so is she. As much as they say little ones cant get allergies I still wonder how true that is. My step mom says its possible for newborns to have allergies too since I get them so bad and my step brother was the same way.

When I was BF (did for 14 months) I used zicam (homeopathic) nasal spray and for my congestion I use Nose Better, which is my miracle stuffy nose relief. You can get both at most drug stores. Nose Better is a menthol ointment that also moisturizes your red, chapped nose. Now that I moved to this area I have really bad allergies right now.. and have gotten some local honey to stick in my tea (I understand that it helps to build your resistance to the local pollens).

Good Luck.. Amy
