Do you do any volunteer work? And we're not talking about something court mandated (LOL) or something you have to do in order to get something you use.

View Full Version : Do you volunteer? LMS 04-28-2007, 08:34 AM Do you do any volunteer work? And we're not talking about something court mandated (LOL) or something you have to do in order to get something you use. Lorah 04-28-2007, 08:48 AM I actually was a volunteer with a junior high youth group for about 5 years. I only stopped because I move up here. I thought it would be a great way to "give back". I went to a really cool youth group when I was in high school and there was a counselor (basically a chaperone) that I really liked. I thought it would be nice if kids always had someone they could talk to etc. So I started doing it. I loved it! I also worked with 3,4 and 5 year olds at a club named AWANA when I lived in SoCal. That was a lot of fun. I think it may have been what prompted me to get into preschool teaching....I did this A LONG TIME AGO... Recently, I have not had the time or energy really, to get into something regular. But I like to volunteer to help out people when I can. Bring them dinner during a tough time (or after a baby is born), give rides if I can, go to the store, watch their pets, etc. I think once Maverick is older I will try to get into a position with AWANA again. I just found out that there is a chapter right down the street. For those who do not know what it is, it's a Chritian organization that provides a structured 'play' night once a week. There are games, stories, crafts, hangout time, etc. I always felt it was like being at a Boys and Girls Club only with a little different angle to it. http://www.awana.org/ Kellie_MO5 04-28-2007, 09:40 AM ooh, I have been looking for an AWANA group for jessie (and the others once they're older) ;) Lorah 04-28-2007, 10:43 AM There are a few churches that host the club in SR. One is over on Fulton at Hwy 12...I forgot the name...ummm....oh my my brain is mush today....I'll think of it and let you know....you can also go to the link for AWANA and click the tab to find club locations... if you, or anyone, wants to know about it. I am happy to share! I went from age 3 all the way though high school....I like to pat myself on the back every so often because I actually completed all the workbooks they make and recieved the highest award they have. :) I am proud of myself! I also went to the olympic games they put on each year as well as attend their scholarship camps many times....I was really involved as a member, and as a volunteer. Maverick and any other kid(s) we may have will totally be going when they are old enough.... I just found out too that some locations are doing a pre school type of awana group too.....like preschool for awana....I think they take 2 year olds too. Cubbies start at 3 yrs. meeg124 04-28-2007, 10:44 AM I voted other because I do volunteer work occassionally, I don't have a regular gig. I've helped pack food boxes at the food bank, done grocery shopping for people who are housebound, driven people to appointments and yesterday I helped out a mom that is on bed rest. But it's kind of sporadic volunteering. Lorah 04-28-2007, 10:45 AM Hmmm now that I think of it I probably should have put other too since I am not doing a regular gig currently....oh well.... barb 04-28-2007, 12:08 PM I voted yes. I'm a 4H club Co-Leader, plus I do a lot of jobs and help out for our Cub Scout Pack. Lynette 04-28-2007, 12:32 PM No, I don't really I suppose especially now but in the past since our schedules we so opposite I really tried to save as much for the family as I could so I would donate money or things or help out people I knew that needed help, things like that. I mean, there is a local lady who had ankle surgery and has no family so I went to her house every morning before work for a month to help her out including taking her to doctor's appts, picking ups meds and groceries, etc but it wasn't through an organization, ya know? jellybeanmichelle 04-28-2007, 01:04 PM For the high school, at the time I went, 40 hours were required to graduate. I completed that with the help of serving dinners for the Masons. I also was a ballet assistant teacher, Didn't get paid, but it was fun teaching little kids ballet. I hope that once V starts school, to volunteer more at the school and such. And then there is SCM. Volunteering to do things for people in need. You just have to ask, since I don't know what you need help with. My3sonsplus1 04-28-2007, 02:04 PM ooh, I have been looking for an AWANA group for jessie (and the others once they're older) ;) santa rosa alliance has awana I am 99% certain and it sounds like the locale Lorah is talking about.. Lorah 04-28-2007, 03:31 PM santa rosa alliance has awana I am 99% certain and it sounds like the locale Lorah is talking about.. YEP!!! That's the name of it! Thanks Lisa. Glad your brain is working better than mine seems to be today. My3sonsplus1 04-28-2007, 04:22 PM well I only know that because we were attending SRAC there for a while and I noticed it in the bulletin. My3sonsplus1 04-29-2007, 11:12 AM Like others have said I don't do regular volunteer work but I like to "be a good citizen" and help people out when I can. justamom 05-03-2007, 04:28 PM I voted yes. I'm a 4H club Co-Leader, plus I do a lot of jobs and help out for our Cub Scout Pack. I noticed you volunteer with SCHA too Barb. Wow you are a busy girl! justamom 05-03-2007, 04:33 PM I too am not involved with a steady volunteer gig. I take on volunteer opportunities when I can. I volunteer for the RPPWYBL when they express a need. So far they have not this year. I tried to sign up for a volunteer gig for an all woman Habitat for Humanity build in SR. Never got a call and it has been over a year now. They had cute little pink hard hats, lol. Oh well. It is hard to find a cause that allows me to bring the kiddos with me. Marisa 05-03-2007, 04:40 PM If anyone's thinking about volunteering and doesn't know where to start, this is a GREAT site. http://www.volunteermatch.org/ karen-clark 05-03-2007, 06:35 PM I volunteer at the girls' schools, alternating years. Last year was Fallon's year, this year I am doing 4 hours a week in Alia's class. I like getting to know the kids they are growing up with! |
