I got some today at the patch on Petaluma Hill Rd right before you get to Penngrove and they were damn good :) Alaina ate about 2 pints all on her own.

I paid $5.50 for a quarter of a flat but I think if you buy half you get a little better deal and not one of mine was a nasty, squished, rotten, or half white one.

Well I didn't eat the slug! :lol I did put it down the sink though and turned on the disposal. I shoulda chucked him out into the yard though. It better not have clung to the side of the sink and crawl back up :faint! It seemed friendly enough ;) and I hate bugs

Food Maxx in RP 2 Fridays ago had huge, huge strawberries.
I think $1.49 for a thing of them.
Don't know if I'm going there tomorrow.
I did hear from another group I'm on, that Costco has got some good prices for their fruits and veggies right now. Last year though, the strawberries came in a big box. I forgot to put most of them in the freezer and about half went bad. This year I will remember to freeze them!

We got the ones at Costco last year too and every time we got the box some would go bad before we finished them. They were really good though but i miss the fresh-from-the-strawberry-field-picked-daily we used to get in Montebello. I used to surprise victor with strawberries once a week when i'd pick them up on my way home from work.

There is a place in Petaluma right by my house. It is on Casa Grande Rd. They are so good. I am gonna go get some tomorrow. My neighbor brought a bag over for Lucca last night, yummy.

Well I didn't eat the slug! :lol

I know but we were eating them in the car today! I would look them over first before ripping off the green part and handing them back to Alaina but still, if it was a baby maybe one got by me...blech!

Costco has 4 pounds for $5. Ours don't last long we use them for smoothies, and to dip as well.

I really like the strawberries at Oliver's, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's. They taste better and I know organic is better for us. I just cave most of the time and go for the cheap stuff. Soon we will switch over to all organic.

Do you think the local people selling are organic? I usually just get the organic ones from TJ's or Andy's. I have gotten them from the fruit stand on River Rd. a few times as well and forgot to ask. I love summer with all of the yummy fruit!

Hmmm...I think that if they were organic they would probably say so because it is a selling point, however, to truly be called organic I think you have to pass certain requirements so maybe they can't say they are when they truly might be? Berries eaten when they are ripened on the plant are better nutrionally than the ones they pick when they aren't and then truck them in so they "ripen" on the way because vitamin C is pretty fragile. If I remember correctly, commercial strawberries are like on the top of the list of the "Dirty Dozen" produce items that are chemically tainted.

Anyhoo, I so can't wait for the cherries and apricots!! I fondly remember the year I was pregnant with Alaina and how Safeway had a great supplier of nectarines, I had at least two a day. I was a hardcore nectarine junkie :D

Well you can always ask what kind of (if any) pesticides/fungicides they used.

It seems like the ones you got Lynette are likely "fairly" organic (though not certified) since they weren't "perfect" in appearance (animals had gotten to them a bit). I am sure commerical ones are probably sprayed with something to perserve them a bit as well.

In general berries are one of the get organic when at all possible but I think road stand ones are better than supermarket ones if only for the better taste and nutritional content which would offset any pesticide residues since Vit C is an antioxidant.

I also heard that berries are one of the "dirty" fruits so I go for the organic. I do agree that the local fruit stand products do taste so much better. I hadn't thought about the nutritional content--and that makes total sense to me and more reason to buy from them.

Lynette--did your car survive that ride? Caty just shoves them in her mouth without even chewing and is seriously pink when she's done. =) She's already ruined so many tshirts this year.

It did actually much to my surprise! The first time she kept asking for more and more and more I thought for sure I would get home and find a whole pint of squished mushy pink mess but she actually ate them all so the pink was all over her face :)

I know most people associate Organic with no pesticides, but just to remind everyone....unless they specifically say "NOT sprayed" or "no pesticides used", even the organic stuff uses pesticides...it's just that the stuff used is not as harmful.

Just a friendly FYI....

Grossi Farms on Petaluma Hill road is good, and fun because you can pick your own if you want. I will see and maybe we can take a 'field trip' there soon :)
