What do you do to celebrate Memorial Day?
With upsetting decisions being made about today's wars we often forget to actually honor those who CHOSE to serve. It is difficult to seperate those who serve from those leading and directing those who serve I know, but we should try.
"Memorial Day used to be a solemn day of mourning, a sacred day of remembrance to honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Businesses closed for the day. Towns held parades honoring the fallen, the parade routes often times ending at a local cemetery, where Memorial Day speeches were given and prayers offered up. People took the time that day to clean and decorate with flowers and flags the graves of those the fell in service to their country.
We need to remember with sincere respect those who paid the price for our freedoms; we need to keep in sacred remembrance those who died serving their country. We need to never let them be forgotten. However, over the years the original meaning and spirit of Memorial Day has faded from the public consciousness." ~David Merchant
We often have a BBQ, fly a flag , and really take a moment to remember my family, friends, and those I never knew, for serving our country.

Dustin doesn't get it off :( He works Sunday and Monday but took Wednesday off to make up for it. Although, he called from work today saying he has to get recertified in his gaffing so he is going to have to take the class until noon. :irked
The day itself we will probably BBQ, but we will be going camping during the weekend. I'm excited to go, but hesitant because I know sleeping will be an issue with the kids.

Added bonus, this will be a first for both of us to be with out Victoria all day.
She will be at my Mom's.
I'm so excited for Adult time! But you know what, we all have kids, hopefully we can talk about something other than kids all the time. kwim?

We make sure to call my Dad who is a 2x Purple Heart Vietnam Veteran. We call to tell him how proud we are of him, because the veterans did not get a lot of support for their efforts back then.

We're having a bbq with some friends. My grandfather was awarded a silver star twice in WWII, so I always think extra thoughts about him.

I just found out that we *do* have plans... (thanks for letting me know, matt! LOL) We're going to Mortens Warm Springs for a picnic/get together with our church and another ;) I LOVE it there, my skin is always so soft after swimming there, and the water is sooo nice and warm ;)
quick question. Someone told me today that you are only supposed to lower your flag to half mast until noon on memorial day, and then raise it again?
Is that true? and if so, what is the purpose behind it?
At my parents house (my dad is a vet) we just lowered it to half mast all day.

Yes that is correct. This is a quote from :http://www1.va.gov/opa/feature/celebrate/halfstaf.asp
An easy way to remember when to fly the United States flag at half-staff is to consider when the whole nation is in mourning. These periods of mourning are proclaimed either by the president of the United States, for national remembrance, or the governor of a state or territory, for local remembrance, in the event of a death of a member or former member of the federal, state or territorial government or judiciary. The heads of departments and agencies of the federal government may also order that the flag be flown at half-staff on buildings, grounds and naval vessels under their jurisdiction.
On Memorial Day the flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon only, then raised briskly to the top of the staff until sunset, in honor of the nation’s battle heroes.
wow, that's SO interesting! Good thing to know! Thanks for the link too. GladI asked now.

We will probably bbq when dustin gets home from work but we bbq most nights anyway.
We usually don't do anything for Memorial Day. We enjoy our time together as a family (when dh is home!) and I take a moment to remember those who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom.

Yesterday we had a BIG BBQ party.
Today we watched the Indy 500 and the CocaCola 600.
Tomorrow we're going wine tasting.

Not quite sure - I'm just tagging along with my parents. I think we're going to Blackstone, Hop Kiln, and Verite. Opposite ends of the county, I know, but they need to pick up wine club shipments :)

We drove to Santa Barbara with the baby and pooch...we had a great time....we stayed at my Dad's house and went to the beach, the chalk art festival....had a BBQ and then hit the outlets in Camarillo....SUCH fun! We left this morning from SB at 3:30 am to avoid any of the traffic from the traverlers coming home...it worked it only took us 5 hrs 15 minutes to get home :)
We had a great trip, and the baby did so well on the way there and back...we took our new car so she was in the backseat with the doggy...she and the doggy are pals...so they 'played' together (her idea of playing is pulling his tail...fur..and poking his eyes....he just stands there and lets her...then licks her to death)
