We're having a bbq with some friends on Monday and I need a dessert idea. I want something that is kid friendly and I was thinking about making a brownie sunday bar but that just doesn't sound great right now. What is your favorite dessert to serve to company??
oiooh
go out and buy a box of brownie mix.
Make up the brownies (I normally get fudge brownies) and cut them into normal sized pieces. Take a large bowl (I normally gown glass, round and semi deep) and layer the bottom with brownies. Take a container of cool whip and a bottle of Hershey Syrup and mix the cool whip with enough hersheys to taste (you want it kind of chocolately looking). Put a layer of that over the brownies then cover with chopped bananas and strawberries. Cover with a 2nd layer of brownies, more coolwhip mix, more fruit:) Put in the frigde for a few hrs to cool

My default is my version of strawberry shortcake.
I take a carton of strawberries and slice them up. I take half and mush them with a fork (for a thicker sauce). I add the other half and mix them in a bowl with 1/2 - 3/4 cup of water and 3-4 tbs of sugar to taste. I let it sit overnight in the fridge. THe next morning I slice thick slices of angel food cake and line the bottom a clear deep serving dish (I use my chip bowl). I top with 1/2 the strawberry mixture. Then I top with fresh whipped cream (the kind you whip yourself). Then another layer of cake, strawberries and cream.
Its a little messy looking but oh so yummy!!

I have also made a big pan of brownies, cut them up into big squares and served them with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, fudge sauce and whipped cream.
Its funny b/c when we have dinner some friends of ours, we always tell the other one to bring dessert (if its her house I bring it and visa versa). We usually try and do something really good to out do the other's the time before. Just friendly though, nothing serious.

For work potlucks I used to do cheesecakes but they can be a pain. I have recipes for a pineapple one and an almond one, I prefer the latter I think.
Jackie's suggestion sounds like one that I heard about through some of my dog show friends called Sundae something which Salina and I made at home with a couple variations. It was really good but definitely not something to make for only a small family because a little went a long way and we couldn't finish it :D
omg, lynette. You should invite me to your parties. I think I could eat a whole bowl of it on my own :biglaugh :bag

i want brownies now....i think i am going to try that, it looks pretty easy
all this food talk...i just talked jr into taking me to the mall to get wetzles pretzels. lol. Atleast I can blame this horrible eating on being pregnant now. Before it was just a lack of willpower :lol
We're having root beer floats for dessert today. :)
For bigger parties I used to bring a no cook cheesecake with strawberries on the top.

for me it really depends on the occasion and the season. the easiest for me to make is cheese cake or oatmeal cookies with cherries. in the summer though i will make a layered pan desert which has on the bottom a simple dough and walnut crust that is topped with a layer of cream cheese mixture followed by chocolate pudding layer followed by a cool whip layer and topped with chocolate shavings. in the apple season i also make a apple cobler and top with vanilla ice cream or cool whip.

There is always "Dump Cake".
1 large can of crushed pineapple.
1 can of apple pie filling
1 box of white or yellow cake mix
1 and 1/2 sticks of butter -melted
Dump the pineapple into the bottom of a 9x13 pan, spread it out.
Dump the apple, more like arrange the apple slices on top of the pineapple.
Dump the cake mix (dry), more like sprinkle all over the 2 ingredients.
Melt the cube of butter and pour slowly and evenly over the cake mix.
Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30-50 minutes or until golden brown.
You can then top with ice cream, if desired.

I always make strawberrry salsa in the summer. I get the pita chips from Trader Joe's that have the cinnamon sugar on them - and they are a hit!!! But you can always do the salsa over ice cream and/or pound cake.
Salsa includes:
Chopped strawberries (one carton from the store) chopped in chopper
half bag of frozen raspberries in their own juice
one apple - chopped fine
I mix them all together and let them sit out for an hour or two (for the rasp. to defrost and the strawberries to get their own juice out)
You can add a little jam if you need to to sweeten it up - but most of the time it is not needed.
I even eat the salsa over my pancakes.
