View Full Version : Mexican Food Lorah 07-08-2007, 03:41 PM *Real Mexican* or *American Mexican* fare? Lorah 07-08-2007, 03:44 PM I prefer the traditional stuff... Brookepanda 07-08-2007, 03:58 PM Yeah...I'm a fan of a good ol' taqueria! Stacey 07-08-2007, 04:02 PM Humm.... well I voted for Chevy's because we had lunch there today and my Taco Salad was SO GOOD!! And they defianately have the best chips and salsa ever. But I really like eating at traditional taquerias too. Brookepanda 07-08-2007, 04:08 PM Have you ever heard the bud light 'real men of genious' radio commercial about taco salads? It cracks me up everytime!!! Humm.... well I voted for Chevy's because we had lunch there today and my Taco Salad was SO GOOD!! And they defianately have the best chips and salsa ever. But I really like eating at traditional taquerias too. Stacey 07-08-2007, 04:10 PM No, I haven't heard that one! Those commercials are so funny. I love those commercials. As for eating Mexican, I like it all! Mmmm... Now the cravings begin. Luckylove 07-08-2007, 05:46 PM For me it depends. Is the taqueria clean? Are we drinking? If we are then we LOVE El Toritos margaritas. Chevy's is safe if we want a sit down dinner but we usually go to Sonoma Taco Shop because its good. Lynette 07-08-2007, 05:48 PM LMAO! I *love* those ads, I didn't even know they had TV commercials, I only heard them on the radio! As for the poll question, I probably tend to go traditional more often but the americanized chains have better margaritas :D Oh, and I really like Sonoma Taco shop which I guess falls under americanized? becky 07-08-2007, 05:49 PM it depends where I am and what is available. Given the choice I would rather go to a family run Mexican restaurant over the big chain franchise deals any day. We just found a great place next to our house and LOVE IT! Of course home made is best but who really has time to cook these days and in this heat. jellybeanmichelle 07-08-2007, 06:01 PM I loved Rafa's in Cotati, but they changed names, and haven't been back yet. Oliver's Market burritos are good to. I also like El T, and Chevy's. What about The Cantina? Then there is Baja Fresh.... Oh, your making me hungry!!!! Lynette 07-08-2007, 06:03 PM Of course home made is best but who really has time to cook these days and in this heat. LOL! Besides, my background is Irish and everyone knows our food sucks :D weg'smom 07-08-2007, 06:46 PM I LOVE Rafa's too!! I've been several times since it switched owners and I have to admit that the food is actually better!! I haven't tried the nachos though..I like that they put (or at least used to) mole sauce on the chips. I'm a big fan of El Favorito (sp??) and that great place in RP by Safeway/ Starbucks....I can't remember its name. Also, I'm always happy to pick up dinner at Lila's in SR 'cause it's right down the street from my house and it's run by a very nice family who seem to work ALL OF THE TIME!!! Sooooo, I guess you could say I'm a big fan of Mexican food. Lorah 07-08-2007, 07:05 PM we love the real men of genious ads too!!! Lorah 07-08-2007, 07:07 PM Also, I'm always happy to pick up dinner at Lila's in SR 'cause it's right down the street from my house and it's run by a very nice family who seem to work ALL OF THE TIME!!! WE LOVE LILA'S!!!! we miss it now that we live on the other side of town!!! jellybeanmichelle 07-08-2007, 07:17 PM Oh and then when I was working in Sebastopol I would go to Ochoa's. That was good too. Stacey 07-08-2007, 07:28 PM Thanks for putting that up Brooke! I was going to go look for it...but then forgot... That was hillarious! colleen&Kail 07-08-2007, 08:50 PM i LOVE las guitarras!!! yummy! karen-clark 07-08-2007, 10:27 PM Is there really a difference between Chevy's and El Torito?? Our latest fave is Dos Amigos off the square in Cotati. Soooooo good. Get the flank steak stuffed with shrimp, wrapped with bacon. I forget what it was called but it was the chef's specialty. The place is just a little hole in the wall but MAN that is some good Mexican! Maritza 07-08-2007, 10:33 PM I like the real mexican food, the best one I have tried was in Downtown San Jose at a restaurant called "Consuelos":thumb colleen&Kail 07-08-2007, 10:39 PM i just found taqueria de santa rosa(?) off of mendo... thats REALLy good too! Lindsay 07-09-2007, 03:35 PM I really like Chevy's. Some Mexican I am. My Grandpa is probably rolling in his grave right now. justamom 07-09-2007, 07:56 PM One of my best friend's growing up, her Mom made the best Chile Verde, and refried beens, and so much more. Those were my favorites and no restaurant has ever come close. I love Rubio's fish tacos, and quesadillas. I don't like spicy though. khanson 07-09-2007, 08:03 PM I think Mexican is my favorite food group!!! I love Old Mexico, El Patio, Puerto Vallarta, pretty much any taqueria. Can't stand El Torito or Chevy's, but many of our friends like Chevy's so we do end up there sometimes. Now we get to explore restaurants on the *other* side of town since we will be moving soon :) LessasLashes 07-09-2007, 11:14 PM Love the real stuff... Chevys to me is too "flarey".. but don't dislike it as a food chain.... I LOVE Mi Pueblo in Petaluma....great margharitas too becky 07-10-2007, 12:33 AM yummy i love home made mexican food but the best i ever had was what my best friend's mom made who recently passed away. My grandma knew how to make the BEST refried beans ever. I have only attempted to make them like her a few times and never come close. For my college graduation she had the beans put into home made tamales and it was the best ever. Lorah 07-10-2007, 12:57 PM Is there really a difference between Chevy's and El Torito?? If you ask me there is!!! I can't stand chevys!!! I hate their salsa! it always tastes like it is burned or something....too much extra...but then I am a salsa purest!!! I like tomatoes, jalapeņos, onions, fresh lime, cilantro, salt, and peper. THATS IT!!! I make my own that is really good, so I guess I am just picky.... I also have had a bad experience there with my food being burned or cold....I can neer seem to get it cooked right or warm....oh well.... But El Torito isn't much better.....I use to go there all the time for happy hour, years ago, but ever since I was preggers I cannot eat there cause the additives and flavor enhancers give me migraines now...oh well... yummy i love home made mexican food but the best i ever had was what my best friend's mom made who recently passed away. My grandma knew how to make the BEST refried beans ever. I have only attempted to make them like her a few times and never come close. For my college graduation she had the beans put into home made tamales and it was the best ever. I LOVE YOUR BEANS!!!! Lindsay 07-10-2007, 02:16 PM I love Chevy's but I do love the real stuff too. I miss my grandma's tamales. No one else made them like she did. I remember her and my mother and my aunts all making them together, it took them all day. They were delicious! becky 07-10-2007, 02:45 PM I LOVE YOUR BEANS!!!! haha really? I'm going to have to make them for you again sometime :thumb Lorah 07-10-2007, 04:04 PM I thought the beans were good with the peppers in it.....I think one of the batches you made that one time was better than the other.....I think one was a little dryer, but both still good. :) becky 07-10-2007, 04:40 PM so you like the drier or not? and yes i think i burnt both the peppers and onions in the second batch. oops Lorah 07-10-2007, 06:08 PM I like the more moist....and non burned...hehehe but it still wasn't bad. :) Lindsay 07-10-2007, 06:19 PM I am making enchiladas tonight. Speaking of mexican food. Mmmmmm. becky 07-12-2007, 02:08 PM lindsay you are making me hungry lol justamom 07-13-2007, 03:11 PM I don't like Chevy's, Chili's or El Torito very much.
