View Full Version : do you use CFLs?? CMT 08-10-2007, 05:08 PM http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,268747,00.html will you after reading this? Sara 08-10-2007, 05:16 PM Wow! I really had no idea. Won't be getting any of those in the future!! KaisaG 08-10-2007, 05:27 PM Wow that sucks... We have them all over our house.................... CMT 08-10-2007, 05:29 PM for anyone (like us) who just removed their CFLs from their house ;) yu can go to http://earth911.org/ to look up a recycling center. Lindsay 08-10-2007, 05:55 PM I have no choice, our apartment complex forced us to put them in. *cries* jellybeanmichelle 08-10-2007, 06:13 PM Oh my! We just bought a pack of 8 from Costco for $2.86 I'm kind of torn on what to do. If I can save money on my PG&E bill great! But, I don't want to pay money for a clean up. So, I just better make sure none of them break. That would suck! CMT 08-10-2007, 06:26 PM I worry less about the cleanup costs (you CAN do the cleanup yourself, it just takes a little while and you gotta be careful) than i do about the effects it has on children. jellybeanmichelle 08-10-2007, 06:29 PM I just found this site: http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/cfl.asp CMT 08-10-2007, 06:34 PM slightly less scary, but still concerning. Especially when you think more about the long term effects of mass usage of CFLs and where they will eventually land - in landfills. jellybeanmichelle 08-10-2007, 06:36 PM True. Well, I can always return them. Now to find the receipt for the ones I bought at Lowes. Lynette 08-10-2007, 09:56 PM Right now we have one but it is outside in the porch light fixture but darn it, just when you think they have invented something useful..... My3sonsplus1 08-11-2007, 09:40 AM we have 'em and I plan on continuing to use the ones we have but not buying any more. The ones that have already been made have already been made (and thus the mercury is out there) but I don't plan on encouraging more to be made via supply/demand, and I know the proper way to clean one up should one break and where to dispose of them once they no longer light up. HeatherK 08-13-2007, 10:53 AM First, I'm always seriously critical of any "news" from the fox network. Second, I remember playing with mercury when I was a child-from a broken thermometer. There haven't been any repercussions. Third, I'm using CFL bulbs to save energy and will dispose of properly. khanson 08-13-2007, 12:28 PM I didn't even know that they contained Mercury, thus, if I had them, I would have disposed of them the same way I do my current incandecent bulbs. I would assume that is true for lots of other people also. They will definitely end up in our landfills which I feel is way worse than not using them. I won't buy them because we change bulbs maybe once a year anyway, so I'm not worried about it saving us any money and then I don't have to go thru the pain pita of disposing of them. jmot. Luckylove 08-13-2007, 01:26 PM I had a hard time believing that so many environmentalists would recommend these if things like the story you posted were true so I checked out snopes. http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/cfl.asp I guess it's your own judgment call. |
