I am pretty sure they also executed some head honcho/official after the pet food recalls a few months ago... so there is some deep rooted doo-doo coming out of there manufacturally.

Caden's wooden trains were recalled for lead paint... so I don't think anything is safe anymore.

The Thomas trains came out of China. US and European countries seem to have a much better check system. HABA (out of Germany) has never had this issue, same goes for many of the other European toy companies. HABA uses safe paints. From a HABA rep that we dealt with through NFB when asked about HABA's water based paints:
"I don’t know the exact chemical content, however the stains have all been tested and surpass the ASTM requirements. These stains are totally safe and edible. In fact at one trade show in Europe one of our engineers was actually spoon feeding himself blue stain to customers to prove the ‘edible’ fact"

and asked a diffrent way:
Question: “It has come up amongst our sales consultants a few times, and I haven’t known what to tell them. Babies tend to mouth the rattles a lot. So much so, that I’ve seen them suck the paint off completely on some parts! Because of this, I’ve had people ask a lot of questions about the paints used in HABA toys. I know that HABA says that they use ‘ecological mordants and lacquers with a water base.’ What does this mean? If it is water-based, would that be a bad thing for babies who mouth the toys? Just curious.”

HABA’s Answer: “The stain used is a non toxic stain that can be literally spoon fed to a child with no ill effect on health (not that we would want to do that).”

I dunno I believe them, they have never ever had a recall and I can just tell the quality is so much better than the mass produced "wood" stuff that comes out of China.

And Story Time Felts' ink is water based and completely non-toxic as well.
