Tom Cruise has commissioned an adult-sized pacifier for Katie Holmes to suck on while she gives birth.

What a weirdo! I wish they'd just have the kid, stop telling everyone about all their crazy scientology weird beliefs and just do their own thing QUIETLY.

You would think she would not be so influenced by him. She needs to stand up for herself and not always what Tom wants. She is the one giving birth and should be comfortable. He needs a reality check!!!

EXACTLY!!! No man could every give birth quietly! Hell, I have yet to talk to a woman who gave birth quietly! There's nothing "Silent" about birth. Anyone who's every witnessed a birth would know that!

a "silent birth" actually refers to the attendants, not mom. This was the hot topic last week on one of the yahoo groups I belong to and after we all got peved at the idea we started doing some research and found out about who it was that was supposed ot be silent. Mom can vocalize to her heatrs desire, it is the doctor/partner/other people around the laboring mom who are supposed to keep silent. The media really has nothing better to do then try and capitialize on those two. You have to take all the reports with a grain of salt IMO. Not that their whole courtship isn't odd though. I sure could have used a silent birth the first go round when people were yapping about when they were getting off and then just all that distracting background chit-chat BS ;)

Well that makes more sense. I guess I was lucky having a home birth the first time because everyone was silent. If they needed to talk to each other they went into the other room. I just had James, my mom, the midwife, her assistant and my accupuncturist here at the house. My dad came and went a few times mainly just to keep food and drinks available to the group. i think I would have ripped someones head off if they were talking about when they got off and how hard their day had been while I was in the middle of labor.

I find that interesting b/ I recently read an article about how scientologists require teh mom to be silent as well b/c their belief is that noice from the mother or attendants during the birth process will cause emotional scarring later in life...

eta: I'm adding something from a scientology website which says that mothers are to refrain from speaking during birth.

Quoted from Scientology.org

What is a quiet or silent birth? Having a quiet, gentle birth is all about providing the best possible environment for the birthing mother and her new baby.
It is labor and delivery done in a calm and loving environment and with no-spoken words by everyone attending as much as possible. Chatty doctors and nurses, shouts to “PUSH, PUSH” and loud or laughing remarks to “encourage” are the types of things that are meant to be avoided.
As L. Ron Hubbard, Founder of Dianetics and Scientology, wrote, “Everyone must learn to say nothing within the expectant mother’s hearing during labor and delivery.” And, “A woman who wants her child to have the best possible chance will find a doctor who will agree to keep quiet especially during the delivery, and who will insist upon silence being maintained in the hospital delivery room as far as it is humanly possible.”
Does this mean that a mother cannot scream or moan at all?
Of course they can make noises — the point of silent birth is NO WORDS. This is a principle of Dianetics and to fully understand why, read the book Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health (http://www.scientology.org/html/en_US/istore/item/index.html?minisite=10041&section=10322&item=353), by L. Ron Hubbard. It is words that are the culprit. Outside of not speaking, the objective is generally to have as peaceful and relaxing an environment as possible for the mother and child. It is doubtful that any woman could give birth without making any noise at all.
Mothers naturally want to give their baby the best possible start in life and thus keep the birth as quiet as possible.

basically saying, if you grunt, it's not tragic, but if you are doing your best you won't really need to ;) So mom's aren't supposed to speak during the labor as it will "affect" the child. I guess i don't understand how a child hearing grunting and screaming would be better than a child hearing words?

I am sorry, but Tom Cruise has gone crazy. He is a total lunatic. His comments to Matt Lauer about post partum and Brooke Shields were complete nonsense. What is he going to do if Katie suffers from post partum? I am sure he will have some wacky fix since he is such an expert of psychiatry. I have a hard time respecting his beliefs when he has been so critical of others. I also find it funny that the South Park episodes about him and scientology have been pulled from re-running.

I know, that interview was hilarious! So now he's an expert at psychiatry!?!? Yeah, right! You are an ACTOR, idiot!! LOL!! Know your place, ha ha ha!!

I'm pretty sick of it too!! I could really care less....I just can't believe that Katie is getting sucked into his lifestyle and beliefs!! :(

I missed the interview... but he said what?? That post partum depression isn't real??? What an idiot! Did he lose his brain somewhere along the line??? So millions of women are just insane after giving birth for no reason and doctors are off their rockers??? WOW does he need to get a clue and check back into the real reality of life.

Anna: omg, i can't believe you missed that. He was talking about that book Brooke Shields wrong (she had post partum psychosis) and said that ppd is really just your body saying you have a vitamin deficiency... he said a little exercise and some vitamins would perk any ppd woman right up out of her funk. LOL Then he proceeded to say how he KNOWS b/c he's educated in psychiatry....:doh

OMG!!! What a jack ***!!! He really has no clue does he!?! If vitamins and exercise were the answer women wouldn't be having suicidal thoughts or be hearing God telling them to drown their babies in the bath tub! I hope Katie can still think for herself b/c if she's one of the unfortunate one's who ends up with ppd she's going to need more help than Tom's dillusional anticdotes to survive.
