I was just browsing the Black Friday ads online, and saw that Joann's will have a Singer Serger for $179! I have been wanting a serger for quite some time now, but have't really had the $$ (still don't, really, but it's one of those 'can-make-it-work' things) but it will be on sale! I HOPE they'll have one in stock on Friday, this is something I'll be there first thing for... especially since it would make a lot of the kids Christmas gifts look so much nicer, and the quality so much better...

BUT... has anyone with serger knowledge tried this particular machine out? I would hate to spend the $ and find out it sucks, and I *can* wait until we get our Christmas $ from my parents to get a different, one, but I *really* want this to be an okay machine... especially for the price!... off to research it now... (I hope i hope i hope)...

yeah, the only thing is that I know Singers recently been bought by another company, and they're newer sewing machines aren't really living up to the Singer name... So I'm hoping I can find somewhere that will tell me otherwise.. or even that they suck and to not waste my money, so I don't waste my money... lol

maybe go in to the sewing machine store on mendocino and ask questions...pretend that you are looking there......

Guess I should add that the one I'm looking at is the Singer Finishing Touch 14SH654 Serger... The only hesitance I would have in going into a store to ask, is I would be afraid they'd just tell me what I want to hear to sell it, or try to sell me on a more $$ one... (but I do tend to be a bit overdramatic about some things... LOL)

Okay, so since reading through some reviews, it looks like some love it, and others hated it because it's hard to thread... but I'm pretty optomistic and a pretty good threader (not that I've ever done a serger before...) so I think I'm gonna head on over to Joanns after TRU on Friday and see if I can't grab myself one... Wish me luck! lol (I'm just dreaming about nice seams on the inside of home sewn shirts instead of ugly ones... LOL)

Maybe you can find reviews online? I think the Joann's site has customer feedback.

Oh and I have a singer serger from back in 1994 or so and it works fine.

i just bouht a new sewing machine and actually avoided singer for the same reason that becky said: They just don't seem to be made like they used to be. The are light and flimsy (IMO)... but that observation only applies to the sewing machines, so maybe the sergers will be better?

Ahh, I *really* hope their sergers are better! So far I've only seen bad reviews due to threading, but quite a few say it's a fine machine for home use... I checked the Joann's site, but they don't have this product listed at all... hmmm... I think I may call and see if they have any in stock before haulin my butt down there... LOL. Thanks for the input, ladies! ;)

I would get it and just make sure to find out the return policy if you are not satisfied with it.

I really could not help you because my Mom's Singer Serger is really old, and works great. It just would not factor into the buy out. I say go for it, you deserve it!

I was so hoping to get it to use for the kids Christmas presents... guess I'm on another inexpensive serger hunt...
