:duh Dane people just :rolleyes at that dog's owner. She shows up at dog shows and other events to sell pictures of the dog with people and then breeds his relatives like crazy using him as advertisement. "Uncle of puppies is Gibson, world's tallest dog!" :mad

FWIW, you don't measure a dog by having it stand on its back legs, you measure from the shoulder to the ground. Secondly, any giant breed dog who is neutered before he is mature will grow tall and spindly because you need testosterone to close the growth plates in the legs and early neutering is thought to be the cause of many types of bone cancers in dogs.

Yowza.... That a BFD!

Interesting theory on the early neutering Lynette. Does the cancer seem to apply to all dogs or just the giant breeds? Duke's being neutered in a couple weeks. poor baby :(

It is more prevalent in giant breeds but any breed that has fast growth spurts. Like a Dane puppy is about 1 1/2-2lbs at birth but by 6mo a male is easily 100bs and 30in at the shoulder so if they are neutered before a year or so they will just keep getting taller but skinny and spindly, they never bulk up. Did your guy's testicle every drop on its own? If he didn't have that issue, I would definitely ask the breeder if you could wait until he was at least a year or even 18mo to neuter but if it is still retained, sometimes there can be complications down the road if you leave it in the body cavity.
BTW- which vet are you taking him to?

As far as I know the testicle is still in the abdomen. The breeder said his neutering should happen sooner than later because it could cause problems, including cancer. For the neutering we're taking him to Dr. Dan Famini at the Humane Society. The Breeder is friends with him and they don't charge much at all. For regular vet stuff we'll go to some guy in Healdsburg that my aunt recommended. Apparently he's very supportive of RAW diets.

Cool that you have found a supportive vet for both :) I have two vets I go to for different stuff and since I have been feeding raw for so long they just don't even say anything about it....especially since I am rarely in there because my dogs are so healthy ;)

Good vet! I have not ever used him as a vet for Barley, I only know him as a friend...he is SUPER nice ... really nice guy actually! Stephanie and Sequioa would know the best of anyone though :giggle

It seems like every year about this time she makes the big media rounds, last year he was on Leno about this same time, but she lives in Grass Valley so is often at fairs or dog shows, things like that.

Here is her site listing puppies for sale: http://www.gibsondog.com/GDE.php Someone told me she sells them for crazy amounts of money like $5k or something but I don't know that for sure?
